Congratulations to our Book of the Month winners!
The Chrysalis BREW Project has released the list of titles selected by readers as the April 2025 recipients of its monthly recognition: the BREW Readers’ Choice Award Book of the Month. The four books named this month are Cristobal Bull by Chris Corbett, Nowhere to Hide by Jude Austin, The Islander by David W. Berner, and What Mommy Doesn’t See by Karen Ledbetter.
Each of the books was chosen through a combination of reader participation and editorial review, with a focus on alignment with the BREW Project’s principles of boldness, resourcefulness, empathy, and wit. The project encourages the public to support works that generate thoughtful reading and responsible conversation.
Corbett’s Cristobal Bull explores the past of a complex protagonist. According to the platform’s review, “Corbett’s focus on the Bull’s past serves the story’s depth and flow well,” and the narrative “presents the Bull as a human being first, with motivations, history, and internal logic.”
In Nowhere to Hide, Austin presents a first-contact story that highlights the difficulties of cross-species understanding. The review notes that “The best parts of this book highlight what happens when two intelligent life forms attempt to understand each other without the option of walking away.”
Berner’s The Islander reflects on the internal shifts that accompany solitude and change. The book is described as “not a travel story but a story of travelling inward, away from things, people, and situations, and toward clarity.”
Ledbetter’s What Mommy Doesn’t See is framed through the experiences of a child narrator. The review states, “Ledbetter handles sensitive scenes with a deliberate lack of over-dramatisation” and adds that the book “presents the narrative from the child’s perspective without unnecessary exposition.”

The BREW Readers’ Choice Award is a reader-driven literary prize presented monthly and annually. To qualify, books must have at least a 4.0 out of 5-star average review score. Readers then vote to select winners, with monthly winners advancing to the annual Readers’ Choice of the Year.
