For the ill-fated residents of a homeless encampment in Los Angeles, the night of Halloween became synonymous with horror. Under the dark shroud of the night, someone brutally shot five people, the crimes not getting reported until the next morning. Further interrogation revealed that the shooters’ main target was a homeless man named LV, who was assassinated either because he blabbed about a previous crime or because he owed someone money. Despite staying on the case for multiple years and interviewing countless people, detectives McGuire and Cortes were no closer to catching the perpetrator. Who masterminded the massacre? The gritty portrayal of the heinous crime evokes a visceral reaction from the reader. Even though Reynolds describes the ruthless killings in the first part of the story, the somewhat non-linear narrative revisits the crime scene multiple times throughout the book. No matter whose viewpoint we use to reevaluate the scene, the shock value never decreases. It kindles a primal fear, reminding us how true horror can be experienced in real life, how real monsters lurk not in fairy tales but amidst us.

In this book, Reynolds explores the dark underbelly of society, describing the harsh lives of the downtrodden who have to fight every day to avail even the most basic amenities. Many of the law enforcers disregard their humanity, not bothering to follow up on crimes in which homeless people or gang members are victims. However, Reynolds paints them in a compassionate light, detailing their backstories, aspirations, and even their vices. He describes an all-too-real picture of the homelessness problems that come in close proximity to drug abuse, gang fights, and other social issues. In keeping with this backdrop, Reynolds uses colloquial terms, slang, and even some racial slurs in the dialogue. Instead of being offensive, it emboldens the authenticity of the book. The glimpses into the gang members’ lives and their twisted traditions add to its accuracy. 

The intricate details of police procedures, including crime scene analysis, the assessment of gunshot wounds, and the autopsy process underscore the fact that Reynolds writes from experience, debunking several myths in the course of his discussions. He emphasizes the constant trauma the detectives face in their line of duty and how that affects their personal lives, straining their relationships. With their unique approach to a problem, constant banter with colleagues, and anecdotes full of gallows humor, the detectives in this book form the heart of the story.

In portraying the perpetrator, Reynolds catches all the nuances of a complicated character. The revelation of the killer’s identity halfway through the book does not detract from the reading experience, instead tantalizing the readers to find out how the cops can implicate them. Their own accounts of the crime reveal their distorted views, chilling the readers to the core. 

With flawless writing devoid of any grammatical or editing errors, the book gave me nothing to complain about. Saint Bloodbath will be a perfect read for anyone who loves the true crime genre. 

About the Author

Born in Rocky Mount, Virginia, Frederick Douglass Reynolds was raised and educated in the bustling metropolis of Detroit, Michigan. His parents were sharecroppers. He found his vocation in law enforcement, serving 32 years there, frequently beginning his day when far too many others finished theirs. He had experienced homelessness on the streets of Los Angeles in the 1980s and gained tremendous life experience in the US Marine Corps. Reynolds is the well-known author of “Black, White, and Gray All Over: A Black Man’s Odyssey in Life and Law Enforcement,” which provides insightful accounts of his extraordinary journey. Among many other honours, Reynolds has won the following BREW awards: BREW Readers’ Choice Award Book of the Month of April 2022 and Book of the Year 2023-2024, and BREW Book Excellence Award 2023 Memoir, Biography, or Autobiography of the Year, Non-fiction of the Year, and Book of the Year.

  39. Unfortunately, a lot of murderers pick the “forgotten” sections of society as their victims, such as the homeless or people involved in sex work. It’s meaningful that this book brings it to our attention and highlights these characters as individuals.

    1. Indeed! I was surprised at how even some of the cops tended to disregard the massacre because of their social stature. I loved the compassionate view the author had for them.
