Lasting Transformation by Abby Rosen, PhD, winner of the BREW Nonfiction Book Excellence Award 2024 Psychology Book of the Year and BREW Seal of Excellence, is a profoundly insightful exploration of self-healing, combining psychological expertise with spiritual wisdom to guide readers on an extraordinary journey of growth and self-awareness.

Review

Empowering, insightful, transformative.

Imagine standing at the edge of a labyrinth, a map in hand, but unsure which path to take. For many, tackling emotional struggles and spiritual voids feels just as daunting. Abby Rosen’s book steps in as a trusted guide, offering tools to heal soul-deep wounds. Psychology has long proven that unresolved trauma affects mental health, relationships, and even physical well-being; Rosen bridges this scientific understanding with the empowering concept of transpersonal psychology, creating a roadmap to transform pain into purpose.

The book is a two-stage journey, leading readers first through “Life-Lesson Therapy” to recognize and address the behavioral patterns that limit relationships and happiness. Then, “Soul-Wisdom Therapy” invites a deeper dive into the spiritual dimensions of transformation. Along the way, Rosen provides practical exercises, personal anecdotes, and illustrative examples to engage the reader, such as the relatable depiction of subpersonalities like the Inner Critic and Pleaser. These psychological archetypes, explored in depth, help readers understand the layers of their inner selves and connect with their authentic core.

One of the book’s most remarkable aspects is its rich and engaging content, blending relatable examples with actionable exercises. The writing strikes a perfect balance between warmth and professionalism, offering an inviting tone that is neither overly clinical nor simplistic. The visual elements, including Anne-Marie Esson’s charming cartoons, create a thoughtful interplay between serious concepts and light-hearted clarity. The author’s insights into the dual nature of personal transformation—balancing practical life lessons with deeper spiritual work—are unique and refreshing, making the book stand out in the self-help genre. My favorite part is the Inner Critic Self-Test; it is an eye-opening exercise that allows readers to confront their inner narratives and transform them into affirming voices.

Those looking for quick fixes or uninterested in exploring spirituality may find this book less appealing. However, it is an indispensable resource for anyone yearning for lasting change, spiritual seekers, and psychology enthusiasts. It resonates with the works of Carl Jung and contemporary guides like Brené Brown, creating a harmonious blend of timeless wisdom and modern application.

In its entirety, Lasting Transformation is a profound offering to the literary world. It is a blend of science and spirit, a symphony of self-discovery that sings to the heart and soul of its readers. Abby Rosen writes with the grace of a mentor and the wisdom of a sage, providing a manual for transformation that feels both universal and intimate. Like a lighthouse guiding ships through the fog, this book lights the way for those ready to go on the sacred journey toward wholeness.
