Review
“Memoir of Resilience” aptly describes this work, where Robinson, a pioneer among Black advertising professionals, sheds light on the untold experiences of tackling a largely white-dominated field. Advertising, one of America’s least diverse corporate sectors, ranks 336th out of 351 in minority representation in management. This statistic not only underscores the need for Robinson’s story but also highlights the urgency of change that Robinson embodies through his personal anecdotes and historical insights. Against this backdrop, Black on Madison Avenue traces his journey from an aspiring intern in the late 1970s to a seasoned professional, revealing the paradox of creating messages for mass audiences while experiencing exclusion firsthand.
The book is filled with illuminating stories, from Robinson’s internship at Cunningham & Walsh during the infamous “Summer of Sam” to his encounters with legends like Jim Jordan and advertising luminary Mary Ayres. Robinson’s narrative balances humor, frankness, and depth, offering not only a recounting of his career but a profound look into systemic issues and the history of Black representation in advertising. With an accessible yet nuanced writing style, Robinson vividly recounts these moments while seamlessly integrating the broader implications of his personal experiences.
Each part of the memoir delivers value, particularly for readers interested in advertising, corporate culture, and diversity initiatives. Robinson’s approachable writing makes even complex issues feel personal, inviting readers to engage with the many sides of his story. The book’s tone shifts effortlessly from personal reflection to industry critique, drawing readers into both his inner life and professional world. This unique blend of memoir and cultural analysis sets Robinson’s work apart, providing an engaging, clear-eyed view into a realm that remains unfamiliar to many. One of the most impactful moments in the book is Robinson’s recounting of his refusal to settle for roles that fell short of his goals—a courageous stand that defines his character and advocacy.
This book might not resonate with readers uninterested in corporate or race-related issues. However, those who appreciate industry memoirs, social justice themes, or works by authors like Bryan Stevenson or Ta-Nehisi Coates will find much to admire here.
Black on Madison Avenue is a landmark contribution that transcends memoir, serving as a lens on American history and a rallying call for progress in representation. Robinson’s journey is both a celebration and a testament—a powerful token of the trails he blazes, as bright and bold as the very ads he helps create.
