Books influence our thoughts, relationships, and methods of working in addition to providing entertainment. Reading improves understanding and empathy by imitating life experiences, according to neuroscientists, who have discovered that it engages several brain regions. Furthermore, research also shows stories might serve as “cognitive rehearsal,” providing us with strategies for handling difficult feelings or work-related obstacles before they arise. The concepts we take in from classic literature to modern fiction and nonfiction frequently shape the principles we apply to our daily lives and careers. C.S. Lewis, the author, famously said, “We read to know we are not alone.” This expert roundup explores books that have had a significant impact inspires readers to think about the ways that words can influence practice and perspective.

Art of Learning Reshapes HR Training Culture

Josh Waitzkin’s book titled The Art of Learning. I can relate to this book as it explores how one acquires skills and how one should think to keep growing. A learning culture is the top priority in HR and team development. The knowledge offered by Waitzkin makes me question how we can help establish settings in which we help individuals and teams become more welcoming to the idea of learning being a life-long process.

As HR people, we tend to attend formal training courses and tests. Yet, the story Waitzkin narrates serves to remind us that, as with all real skills, we can only be a master when our mindset accepts challenges, learns by living, and is always ready to find a way to get better. This outlook makes me wonder how we can go beyond regular training practices and how we can imbue our teams with a growth mindset.

Enabling these values in HR practices can result in more flexible and resilient teams. Through the creation of a culture that embraces ongoing learning and self-development, we can improve organizational performance and build a culture based on innovation and flexibility.

Handmaid’s Tale Confronts Disturbing Power Realities

Margaret Atwoods The Handmaid’s Tale is a terrifyingly topical book that brings into question the boundaries of authority and control of power, breaking down societal norms. It makes readers face unpleasant reality about gender, religion and politics in a dystopian world that comes terrifyingly real. When I read this thought-conceptualized book I felt inclined to examine my personal values and how they may withstand in such a world.

Helm Mirrors Sustainable Craft Philosophy

Sarah Hall’s Helm translates the capricious energies of nature and their far-reaching influence on life. Against the background of the Helm Wind, the story unfolds over generations, blending myth, science, and human feeling. Reading it made me think about how much care we take with each Millie & Jones product, how we recognize how the world influences our decisions, and the inheritance we leave for our children.

The book’s environmental awareness rings true. In the world where we’re more aware of sustainability today, Hall’s writing reflects Millie & Jones’ philosophy that quality should never compromise our planet. Just like her characters in complex environments influenced by human and natural elements, we also strive to create furniture that strikes a balance between design, longevity, and earth-friendliness.

What I love most about Helm is the call to pause and consider our relationship with the world and the small, purposeful decisions we can make. It’s a call to think more than convenience and short-term satisfaction, as we might when we choose our materials, from responsibly sourced woods to crafting furniture that adapts as the child grows. For me, it’s one of stewardship, planning, and the elegance of intentioned craftsmanship.

Little Fires Everywhere Challenges Personal Perceptions

One modern fiction novel which is consistent with my own values and stimulates my personal worldview is the book by Celeste Ng, the Little Fires Everywhere. This book forced me to re-examine my personal perceptions and values through its multidimensional characters and various ideas surrounding themes of identity, motherhood and privilege. Not only was it entertaining but it also had an effect on me in terms of my thinking.
