Great stories not only can amuse us, but they have the power to subtly alter our views on the world and the decisions we make. Literature has long been employed in many cultures to examine human connection, ethics, leadership, and resiliency. According to psychologists, reading fiction might increase empathy by exposing us to many viewpoints on life. Character struggles in both epic adventures and subdued dramas frequently mirror real-life conundrums, such as knowing when to take chances, maintaining patience, or what it means to uphold one’s morals. “The story is not the thing told, but the way it is told,” says novelist Ursula K. Le Guin. Stories can impart useful lessons that we can use to our own lives, as this expert roundup shows.

Bold Moves Win Impossible Cases for Families
My five decades defending injured families taught me that sometimes the most impossible cases require the boldest moves. “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee shaped my entire approach to fighting for justice when everyone else says you can’t win.
Atticus Finch’s unwavering commitment to doing what’s right, even when facing certain defeat, mirrors exactly what I experienced with the Woburn Case. Everyone told us we couldn’t take on those massive corporations for environmental poisoning, but like Atticus, we knew someone had to stand up for the vulnerable families whose children were getting sick.
The book taught me that true courage isn’t about winning—it’s about fighting the fight that needs to be fought. When I earned the nickname “The Million-Dollar Man,” it wasn’t because I only took easy cases. It was because I learned from Atticus that moral courage combined with relentless preparation can overcome seemingly impossible odds.
That perseverance mindset from Lee’s novel directly influenced how I handle every case where families feel powerless against insurance companies and corporate defendants. Like Atticus walking out of that courtroom with his head high, I’ve learned that doing right by your clients matters more than popular opinion.

Wilderness Tale Inspires Business Risk-Taking
“Into the Wild” by Jon Krakauer, an action-adventure story that has forever changed my views on what I must do in this life and the risks I must take. The tale of Christopher McCandless, who went into the Alaskan wilderness with nothing but his philosophies and ambitions, profoundly spoke to me. Even though it was a tragic journey, it taught me that it is very important to be audacious in your vision and not shy away when the odds are stacked against you.
That’s something I’ve thought about a lot while building Angel City Limo: McCandless managed to open his eyes to embrace ambiguity and break away from the traditional hometown cycle. I’ve had to make some gut-wrenching choices, sometimes without all the answers, but with the reward of building something truly meaningful that I believed in; taking risks and then having resilience when facing any obstacle it throws our way is inherent to Angel City Limo’s journey.
But the underlying message struck me was that true success is achieved not by playing it safe but by constantly reaching higher, and learning from successes and failures. This way of thinking has influenced much of my business development, customer relations, and innovation in an incredibly competitive industry, such as luxury transportation.

Monte Cristo Teaches Patient Business Strategy
I think everyone is familiar with my choice here: The Count of Monte Cristo. That book has changed the way I think about keeping long-term goals. Most people know it as a story of revenge, but it was the main character’s poise I remember the most. When things went wrong, I liked how cool, patient, and adaptable Edmond Dantes was. He didn’t decide right away; he thought about it, learned about it, and waited years for the right time. If you want to make something that will last a long time, you should think that way when you’re in business.
It made me think that sometimes it’s better to accomplish things quietly and with a purpose. When things are going quickly, it’s normal to hurry or try to get quick gains. Being strong means not only getting through hard times but also using those times to make oneself stronger and more focused. I thought more about how I lead businesses and make choices when I’m not sure what to do after reading this book.
