Review
Memorable, heartfelt, nostalgic.
Set in New Jersey, The Mystery from Way Back When by Carolyn Summer Quinn traverses decades, linking modern familial relationships with the evocative atmosphere of an older America. The book’s dedication to the Greatest Generation immediately roots its significance in shared cultural memory. This foundation provides a nostalgic backdrop that vividly connects readers to the historical and emotional depth of its characters and themes.
The story follows a cast of richly detailed characters tackling personal conflicts, family ties, and an old mystery that ties their lives together. Its backdrop in Keighry Head, filled with both fond and bittersweet memories, anchors the narrative with a strong sense of place, while its unraveling mystery introduces just the right touch of intrigue. The modern sections of the book are equally poignant, making the narrative feel whole and resonant.
The book excels in its evocative portrayal of intergenerational ties and its respectful homage to the community dynamics of a bygone era. The author’s fluid storytelling brings alive the streets of Keighry Head with its nuns, bars, butcher shops, and the immigrant stories that color its heart. The dialogue is sharp and serves as a key to unlocking the characters’ personalities. My favorite part was Tara’s wistful longing for the tight-knit camaraderie her father described in his youth, which beautifully highlighted the generational shifts in values and lifestyles.
Readers who prefer fast-paced thrillers or are uninterested in historical context might find this book slow, but anyone who treasures heartfelt stories with emotional depth will adore it. Fans of authors like Fannie Flagg or books like A Tree Grows in Brooklyn will likely feel a kinship with this narrative.
Carolyn Summer Quinn’s work is a love letter to family legacies, the invisible threads that bind communities, and the eternal quest to reconcile the past with the present. With its gentle yet profound voice, The Mystery from Way Back When reminds us that stories—both told and untold—are at the heart of human connection. It weaves its magic with the enduring charm of an old, cherished song, evoking memories of a time when every corner held a story worth telling.
