Intrepid Spirit

Intrepid Spirit is a fast-paced naval thriller that brings together historical reverence and modern-day action in a high-stakes battle of courage and international intrigue.

Review

A swashbuckling, sea-faring adventure.

The USS Constitution, also known as “Old Ironsides,” is one of the most famous warships in American history, and its legend persists in museums and maritime lore. Bringing this ship into a modern context, Intrepid Spirit taps into the timeless appeal of naval warfare and the enduring relevance of leadership and bravery at sea. Just as today’s naval forces continue to guard against ever-evolving threats, this book fuses the heroic spirit of the past with contemporary dangers, giving the narrative both historical weight and modern urgency. Author David Tunno masterfully intertwines the Constitution’s storied legacy with a contemporary plot that pits Lt. Moses Redding against a host of international threats, setting the stage for action that spans both time and tension.

The novel follows Redding, an officer demoted to captain of the centuries-old USS Constitution after a career-jeopardizing incident. His once illustrious naval career is now haunted by the past and mired in frustration. While initially resigned to a symbolic, ceremonial role on a “floating museum,” Redding soon finds himself and the Constitution in the middle of an escalating global crisis. His internal struggles reflect the external dangers—terrorism, diplomatic breakdowns, and an imminent Middle Eastern catastrophe. With Dr. Miriam Hannah, a naval historian onboard, the plot navigates not only international politics and terrorism but also a complicated relationship where professional duties clash with personal emotions.

One of the strengths of Intrepid Spirit lies in its rich, well-researched content. The naval battles are vivid, with tension that mirrors real-world tactical dilemmas. The opening scene where the Constitution sails through fog into Tripoli harbor bristling with heavy guns, ready to confront enemy forces, is striking in its detail and historical homage. The writing style is crisp and engaging, with cinematic descriptions that pull readers right into the action, while the dialogue remains accessible and true to the characters’ roles. The book appeals strongly to military fiction enthusiasts, history buffs, and action lovers, but also offers human drama that connects with broader audiences. The ship itself becomes a character—its legacy, symbolism, and eerie presence weigh heavily on the storyline, making this not just another war story, but a tale of haunted transformations and redemption.

Where the book shines most is its seamless merging of history with modern-day challenges, crafting a wholly unique experience. There’s a rare delight in seeing an 18th-century warship, powered by sails and equipped with black powder guns, go head-to-head with terrorists in a 21st-century setting. The fact that Redding takes this symbol of American naval strength and trains his crew to use its antique weaponry in an actual combat scenario gives the novel an extra edge of unpredictability and excitement. My favorite part of the book is when Redding defies orders and opens fire on an Iranian corvette threatening civilians, a moment that encapsulates the hero’s impulsive courage and the novel’s constant, high-stakes tension.

This book may not appeal to readers who shy away from military or war-focused narratives, especially those not familiar with or interested in naval history. However, fans of authors like Tom Clancy or C.S. Forester, or books like Master and Commander or Red Storm Rising, will find much to love in Intrepid Spirit. Its blend of tactical thrill and rich historical context will also appeal to those who enjoy novels where action is grounded in real-world authenticity.

Intrepid Spirit is not only an adventure but a tribute to the enduring power of history, naval legacy, and personal bravery. Tunno’s work captures the essence of what makes stories of the sea so timeless—harrowing battles against forces both external and internal, where the real fight often lies within the captain’s heart. Like the USS Constitution herself, this book stands strong and resolute, offering readers a unique blend of historical depth, thrilling combat, and characters whose fates hinge on their ability to navigate both the physical and emotional storms around them. The legacy of Intrepid Spirit will certainly resonate with those who believe in the unyielding courage to face past demons while sailing headlong into uncertain futures.

  1. I’m usually not into military narratives, but bringing the USS Constitution into modern warfare is a very original premise.
