A teenage Paul McCartney discovered The Complete Works of William Shakespeare in the late 1960s, and it was this book that would forever alter his life. McCartney had already achieved legendary fame as a member of The Beatles, but the book revealed to him new facets of human connection, passion, and storytelling. It inspired his songwriting and shaped the classic songs that came after. Just as Shakespeare was for McCartney, literature may be a source of inspiration, information, and direction for musicians and other creative people.
Beyond the realm of artistic inspiration, however, an increasing amount of scientific studies demonstrate the advantages of reading for the growth of one’s cognitive abilities, emotional intelligence, and career success. A research in Social Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience indicates that reading involves several parts of the brain, fostering creativity, empathy, and problem-solving skills. These attributes are invaluable in the music industry, where professionals must continuously adapt, think critically, and stay ahead of trends.
Remaining informed and inspired is crucial in an industry that is as dynamic and fast-paced as the music business. For those working in the music industry, these books are essential reading because they cover a wide range of topics, including business tactics, music history, personal growth, and creative thinking.

Read ‘Music Money and Success’
Without a doubt, Jeffrey and Todd Brabec’s “Music Money and Success” is the most thorough book on the music industry. It is the most comprehensive insider’s manual available on all facets of the sector.
This is the book you must read if you’re serious about turning your music career into a career. It covers all of the following: royalties, TV, video games, labels, contracts, copyright, co-writing, co-ventures, and royalties.
This book has taught me more about the music industry than all the other books I’ve ever read together. Not only do I heartily endorse the book, but I would even argue that anyone thinking about a career in music need to read it.

Discover ‘Dotcom Secrets’ for Branding
As a music producer who has been making music for over 20 years, one book I would recommend is “Dotcom Secrets.” While it may not be a book that is directly related to making music, it offers valuable insights on marketing and building a strong online presence.
This book has influenced my approach to my work by teaching me the importance of branding and creating a unique image for myself as a music producer. It has also helped me understand the power of social media and how I can use it to promote my music and connect with fans.
“Dotcom Secrets” has been an invaluable resource in helping me navigate the ever-changing landscape of the music industry and stay relevant in today’s digital age. So, I highly recommend it to any music professional looking to take their career to the next level.

Explore Creativity with ‘Anatomy of a Breakthrough’
Adam Alter’s “Anatomy of a Breakthrough: How to Get Unstuck When It Matters Most” might not be labeled as a music business book, but it offers invaluable insights for musicians and everyday creatives alike. Adam explores how some of the most iconic musicians overcame creative cliffs, and the stories behind artists and songs that almost didn’t make it to the public ear are both fascinating and inspiring.
What really struck me were the real-life examples of well-known artists wrestling with the creative process, showing why perseverance in anything you do is so important. It’s one thing to hear about creative cliffs, but it’s another to learn how close we were to never hearing some of the songs that have shaped music history and how others gave up on the cusp of success. Adam’s research and anecdotes on understanding and overcoming these cliffs feel super relevant to creatives and anyone facing a standstill.
As someone in the music industry, I found Adam’s teachings and insights practical and, like many things in life, obvious when pointed out. Creatives might think differently, but getting stuck is something everyone deals with at some point. I loved this book! It is an inspirational read for anyone in the creative field who needs a reminder that being stuck is just a phase and there’s always a way forward; you just need to pause for a bit. I highly recommend it.

Gain Insight from Artist Autobiographies
I’d actually recommend reading a collection of autobiographies from iconic artists (of your choosing), but I really enjoyed Mötley Crüe’s, Rick Rubin’s, and Patti Smith’s (just to name a few). These personal stories offer a raw, unfiltered look into the artists’ journeys, providing unique insights into the creative process and the challenges they face.
While the artists’ world may seem far removed from the business side of the industry, there’s an undeniable connection in the passion, resilience, and creativity required to thrive. Understanding their perspectives helps bridge the gap between the two sides, influencing my approach throughout my career and fueling my excitement and drive to contribute to the industry.

Learn from ‘All You Need to Know’
I would recommend the book “All You Need to Know About the Music Business” by Donald S. Passman to professionals wanting to deepen their understanding of the music industry. Knowing how to navigate the music business is key for both creatives and business professionals. This book provides a wealth of valuable information about the industry. Areas where the book can strengthen useful knowledge include negotiation, ways to monetize a music catalog, and generally, an overview of how the music industry works.
