Review
In her debut novel, The Butcher and the Bard, J. E. Harter takes us on an unforgettable journey through the fantastical continent of Astye.
The Middle Kingdoms of Astye are ravaged by war. Tacorn and Nevandia have been at each other’s throats for decades. Expunging the magical folks from the continent has not satisfied King Rayghast of Tacorn. He has sworn to find the lost prince of Nevandia to vanquish the kingdom once and for all. Even the other kingdoms of the continent are not spared by this blood feud. In such times of turmoil, two unlikely strangers meet by chance at a tavern in Gainsbury. After losing her entire family at a young age, Marai had to live her life in hiding for quite some time. Her rebellious spirit made her leave her safe yet constricted hiding place and take a chance in life. Life plays a cruel trick on the young girl. Heartbroken, she becomes the lonely and ruthless Lady Butcher. When Ard, the Bard, approaches her at the tavern in Gainsbury, she is flabbergasted. Ard commissions her to be his escort and accompany him to Cleaving Tides safely so that he can take the ship bound for Andara, a land shrouded in mystery. The catch is that they have to travel through the dangerous Middle Kingdoms. Though not like her usual commissions, Marai reluctantly accepts the bard’s offer. Little does she know that the seemingly simple and happy-go-lucky bard has secrets of his own. Things take a turn when he unwittingly begins to chip away the walls that she had constructed around her heart.
What secrets are the butcher and the bard hiding from the world? Will they keep running from the past or face it and take control of their destiny? Why is Rayghast adamant about ending the royal lineage of Nevandia? Will he be successful in finding the lost prince? How does his quest affect Marai and the bard?
It is difficult to believe that The Butcher and the Bard is J. E. Harter’s debut novel. She weaves a tale so enthralling that I had a tough time putting down the book for even a second. I was very much enmeshed in the story of Marai and Ruenen. Both characters are one of a kind. They both had a tough time growing up. Life had not been fair to them. After facing so many hardships, they decided to turn their backs on their destiny and live life in anonymity. Meeting each other changed their lives. However, this does not happen overnight. Harter carefully builds the dynamic between Marai and Ruenen. They both are similar in some ways yet completely opposites in others. It was intriguing to see them both peeling the layers of secrecy away from each other. I love Marai as a character. She had to go through a lot in life. This did not vanquish her. She became strong and independent. Yet, the traumas of the past are not easily forgotten. I love how Harter portrays Marai’s psychological growth. It both impressed and fascinated me. Ruenen’s life was as difficult as Marai’s. Instead of donning an armor of loneliness, he tried to adopt a completely new persona. I really like how the author depicts his reluctance to embrace his destiny. The bonus chapters included at the end of the book give us a deeper insight into Marai and Ruenen’s characters. I appreciate the author for including them in her book.
Rayghast is a complicated character. Like Marai and Ruenen, he has secrets of his own. He is, indeed, a formidable foe. Captain Slate Hemming is a true antagonist. The way he manipulated Marai is truly cunning. I love how Harter does not make him a run-of-the-mill villain. He has layers just like all the other characters of the book. Queen Rhia of Tacorn and Queen Nieve of Grelta intrigued me. I am excited to learn more about them in the next book. Nosfiscio is a pretty interesting character as well. I am curious about his relationship with Queen Nieve.
J. E. Harter has built an enthralling world in her book, The Butcher and the Bard. The culture, style, and dialect of each of the kingdoms are distinct. People have differing characteristics. Even the history of the land is well-crafted. I, especially, love the faerie aspect of the tale. I hope we get to know more about it in the next book. Also, I love how Harter blends magical elements with the political intrigue of the land. I have to say the action sequences are vividly depicted. Both Marai and Ruenen are skilled fighters. Harter’s words made me feel like I was there with them as they confronted their adversaries.
Overall, I truly enjoyed reading the first book in the Dark Magic Series, The Butcher and the Bard. I am beyond eager to get my hands on the next book in the series. I really want to know the rest of Marai and Ruenen’s story. I highly recommend J. E. Harter’s The Butcher and the Bard to fans of the fantasy genre. People who love character-driven romance novels will love this book as well.

I loved your description of the complex psychology of the characters and how trauma and strength are not mutually exclusive. I also enjoy when authors truly take the time to build the relationships between the characters.
