Review
Elaine Schroller’s “The Bravest Soldiers” lures readers into the harrowing yet hopeful world of Sam and Marianne, whose lives are forever altered by the war. Set against the diverse backdrop of Australia, this novel captures the essence of a tumultuous era through deeply personal narratives.
The story follows Sam Parker, a dedicated pilot in the Royal Australian Air Force, and Marianne, a French expatriate adapting to life in Sydney. As they face the challenges of wartime, their love and courage are tested in ways they never imagined. Through their eyes, readers experience the gritty reality of military missions, the quiet heroism of those on the home front, and the indomitable spirit that drives them forward. For example, the vivid description of Sam’s extensive flying missions and his longing to return home to Marianne captures the dual tension of duty and personal desire.
One of the book’s strengths is its content, which blends historical facts with engaging personal stories. The detailed depictions of Sam’s flying missions and Marianne’s life in Sydney provide a rich, immersive experience. The writing style is both evocative and accessible, bringing to life the vibrant landscapes of Sydney, from the bustling harbor to the tranquil Blue Mountains. Marianne’s letters to Sam, which describe the serene beauty of the harbor and the ferries that resemble buses and trams, are particularly evocative. The dialogue, especially between Joe and Sophie, is natural and adds depth to the characters, making their struggles and triumphs all the more relatable. An example is Sophie’s excitement about the ship passing Botany Bay and the iconic Sydney beaches, which captures her sense of wonder and adjustment to a new life.
Appeal to the target audience is another highlight. Fans of historical fiction and romance will find much to love here, as the book strikes a perfect balance between historical detail and emotional depth. The romance between Sam and Marianne is heartfelt and poignant, set against the broader canvas of World War II, which will resonate with readers who enjoy stories of love and endurance in challenging times. The depiction of Marianne’s adaptation to the Australian lifestyle and her anticipation of visiting the Blue Mountains enriches the historical context with personal experiences. Additionally, the description of the Parker’s house having views of both the Pacific Ocean and Sydney Harbour is impressive; although such locations may initially seem nonexistent, they exist although rare. This attention to geographical accuracy further enhances the book’s believability.
The setting and characters are exceptionally well-drawn, offering vivid portrayals that make the book an engaging read. The detailed settings and compelling characterizations stand out, immersing readers in the narrative. The book shines with polished editing, a smooth narrative flow, and a coherent structure, ensuring an engaging reading experience. These strengths create a solid foundation for immersive storytelling.
Overall, the book’s standout quality lies in its ability to transport readers to another time and place, making it highly appealing to those who appreciate well-researched historical fiction with a strong romantic element. Fans of authors like Kate Morton or Kristin Hannah will likely be hooked by “The Bravest Soldiers,” as it echoes the emotional depth and historical richness found in their novels, making it a strong and worthy addition to the genre.
In conclusion, “The Bravest Soldiers” makes a significant contribution to the literary world with its heartfelt portrayal of love and resilience during one of history’s most challenging periods. Its well-crafted narrative, engaging characters, and vivid settings hold great potential to enthrall a wide audience. It is marked to achieve even greater heights and take its place as a memorable and impactful work of historical fiction.

Dear folks at BREW,
Thank you so much for your wonderful review of The Bravest Soldiers and for choosing it as the BREW Fiction Book Excellence Award 2023 20th Century Historical Romance of the Year! I’m touched and thrilled that the reviewer felt I’d done a good job with all the themes running through the book – not least of which were the geographical settings. I spent ten days in Sydney and environs, including the Blue Mountains, to pinpoint locations for scenes. My Sydneysider friend and I walked and drove through all the suburbs I mentioned in the book, and when we stopped at the Dudley Page Reserve in Dover Heights I KNEW I’d found the area for Sophie and Joe Parker’s home, with its views of Sydney Harbour and the Pacific Ocean, and the place where Marianne first fell in love with Sydney. It was a moment I’ll never forget.
WWII often brought out the worst and the best of humans, and this seems like a perfect example of it. And it’s one of my favorite genres 🙂
Great work🌺
