Sneha Sabu outlines various ways to uphold the safety of children in her fun and colorful book, Stay Safe with Ruby and Reuben: An Interactive Safety Book for Preschoolers and Primary School Children. The book is the BREW Readers’ Choice Award winner for May 2022.

Review

Children are the most innocent beings in this world. Parents and guardians must ensure that the innocence of children is not tarnished. They need to make sure that their children always remain safe and away from the dark intentions of despicable people. It is not as easy as it sounds. More often than not, these people take the guise of respectable and trusted individuals. These heinous people tend to take advantage of a child’s gullibility. So, we need to teach our children the ways to identify unsafe situations and react accordingly.

In her book, Stay Safe with Ruby and Reuben: An Interactive Safety Book for Preschoolers and Primary School Children, award-winning author and philanthropist, Sneha Sabu, teaches children the methods to stay safe. In approximately thirty-four pages, Sneha Sabu imparts some valuable lessons. Ruby and Rueben are siblings. They directly address the young readers and befriend them. Through their own experiences, they show the ways to ensure one’s safety when going to school or when visiting one’s friend’s house for sleepovers. Sabu effortlessly teaches the concepts of good touch and bad touch. She does not use explicit language to do so. Her use of simple language and a pointer-based approach makes it easier for children to understand the concepts easily.

I like the way she introduces the idea of secret codes. I am very sure that this would come in handy for all children and parents. Sabu underlines the fact that it is not the child’s fault if he or she is put in an unsafe situation. She underscores the importance of communicating with one’s parents or guardians. I believe this is very significant. In my opinion, communication is the key to a healthy and safe childhood. I have to mention that it is very thoughtful of Sabu to talk about ways that would help children with special needs as well.

Stay Safe with Ruby and Reuben: An Interactive Safety Book for Preschoolers and Primary School Children is a colorful children’s book. The illustrations are catchy and fun. They can easily grab children’s attention and keep them engaged in the book throughout. Sabu has included various ways to enhance the knowledge of children. She included crosswords to add new words to a child’s vocabulary in an enjoyable manner. I also like the fact that she has added activities to check the knowledge of her readers.

It is admirable that the profits from the sale of this book would go towards the funding of non-profit organizations that work to protect children from sexual abuse.

Overall, Sneha Sabu’s Stay Safe with Ruby and Reuben: An Interactive Safety Book for Preschoolers and Primary School Children is a praiseworthy children’s book with some very relevant and great lessons. Sabu had put in a lot of effort and love to write this book. Everything discussed is well-researched. Children can easily put to use all the methods mentioned in the book.

I highly recommend this book to toddlers who are about to start school or have just started going to school. It is a must-have for preschoolers and primary schoolers.

Reading is my passion, and writing is my compulsion. I started reading from a very early age. Since then, I have not stopped. I have garnered this addiction from my father. I have always loved reading his books. As you can see, books are my world. I escape this world to traverse the world of my books. Naturally, I have an affinity to create worlds of my own. There are thoughts constantly swirling in my head. These are the thoughts that I jot down. Sometimes, they become poems while sometimes stories. More often than not, they are just reviews of the plethora of books I read and the things I do.

  1. This is a priceless book. Just teaching our children about “stranger danger” as it was done when I was a kid won’t work because oftentimes the abuse comes from someone close to the kid. That’s where is so relevant that they learn to distinguish between good and bad touch. And the idea of the codewords is genius.
Thank you for your great review!
