This reader’s review is the third in a series for the BREW Readers’ Choice 2021/2022 and BREW Book Excellence 2021 Book of the Year, “Bunky and the Walms” by Aleksandra Tryniecka. Indeed. It can be Christmas this Easter and every day with this award-winner.
Review
Are you searching for a tale that is full of magic, adventure, and turning some of your earnest dreams into reality? “Bunky and the Walms” by Aleksandra Tryniecka is one such heartwarming story. You’d have a magical adventure ride to the far-flung North Pole, Faroe Islands, and the wonderful Walmland Village as you get to know Bunky Hippo and the rest of the interesting characters in this endearing children’s book.
Bunky is a kind-hearted, loving, and little grumpy boy living with his doting aunt and uncle. He beams with joy that Christmas is going to be a special event for him. He is sure of this as he has tried hard to overcome his inner struggles and become noble enough to deserve receiving his favorite gifts from Santa Claus. He is also overjoyed as his cousin Rodney is coming to join the Christmas Eve celebrations, thus making it even more exciting. Bunky also has his plans and dreams – one of which is a masterpiece novel to showcase his literary skills. Will his dreams ever turn real? It’s something to glean and find out.
In Tryniecka’s debut novel, all characters are lively, fascinating, and likable. I especially like Bunky Hippo who is brave and successfully conquers his inner conflicts and accomplishes the extraordinary. Tryniecka skillfully creates a bond of sympathy among characters in an all-out thrilling and challenging setting that keeps the reader engrossed. Bunky Hippo and his comrades are imaginative and cooperate in every new task to make their Christmas the best one ever.
All the elements of the plot are well connected and will keep the readers engaged long after reading it. There is no dry moment when immersed in this piece’s pages. It is a witty manifestation of the author’s mind where she beautifully intertwines fantasy with reality. The prose creates a clear understanding of the characters and their motives. The illustrations (a pencil sketch description) and a map perfectly complement the text.
This light-hearted Christmas tale is enough to make the season festive and delightful, particularly for kids. The storyline is appealing, funny, and affectionate. The repetition of some words is quite amusing, and the witty conversations have often made me laugh heartily.
The narrative is not only entertaining but also insightful as it emphasizes caring for others and striving despite the odds. It is also a beautiful blend of friendship, adventure, bravery, and love. It speaks of nobility, endurance, and resilience in all circumstances.
I recommend “Bunky and the Walms” to children (and adults too) who love wisdom-tinged stories about magical lands, elves, dragons, reindeers, polar bears, fairies, and many more that could tickle a fanciful imagination today, especially at Christmas, and even beyond.
I rate this beautiful story 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a splendid book to teach kids not only important values and to conquer their own challenges but also new words and new worlds. I think the particular illustration style is also an opportunity for young ones to learn to appreciate simplicity when they are often overwhelmed by flashy, colorful, non-stop images. Great review!
