Professionals in the quickly changing pet care industry need to keep ahead of the curve by always learning new things. Having the appropriate resources is essential for learning about animal behavior, holistic methods, and the most recent advancements in veterinary science. Books like Martin Goldstein’s The Nature of Animal Healing and the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists’ Decoding Your Dog offer insightful guidance on blending conventional and alternative medicine while also offering professional assistance on regulating dog behavior. By assisting professionals in tackling the intricacies of animal behavior and health, these resources guarantee that they are well-prepared to deliver exceptional care.

For those looking to broaden their skills in preventive health and nutrition, Canine and Feline Nutrition by Linda P. Case and The Complete Guide to Preventive and Advanced Holistic Health Care for Dogs and Cats by Lisa Preston are essential reads. As pet owners increasingly seek tailored, comprehensive care for their animals, these books empower professionals to offer more than just standard treatment. With a strong foundation in both traditional and holistic methods, pet care professionals can better support the well-being of pets in an industry that values lifelong learning and adaptation.

What Our Expert Reads: The Other End of the Leash by Patricia McConnell

I would recommend The Other End of the Leash by Patricia McConnell. This book provides insight into canine behavior and how humans often misinterpret it.

McConnell’s approach has shaped how I design safe, ethical containment solutions for dogs. I focus on understanding each dog’s unique needs and temperament. During consultations, I observe dogs’ body language and owner interactions to determine the most appropriate fencing and training. I customize layouts that give dogs space to run while keeping them securely contained.

For example, an owner told me her dog had never been happier after installing one of our fences—his anxiety and reactivity decreased significantly when given his own space. Experiences like these drive me to continue developing dog-friendly fences that meet both owners’ and dogs’ needs. Applying an understanding of basic canine ethology and learning theory, as McConnell promotes, leads to better outcomes for dogs and a more rewarding career helping them.

  1. I love Mr. Levine’s recommendation. I wish there was something similar that helps us empathize with cats, who are often depicted as just mysterious and aloof but who, I’m sure, need our understanding and empathy just as much.
