"Taking Flight" by Jacques Sardas

Jacques Sardas’ Taking Flight: Short Stories of the Unexpected soars into the realm of quirky, character-driven pieces that challenge and delight readers through surprising twists and unconventional scenarios.

Review

Three words to sum it up: surprising, introspective, entertaining.

There’s something timeless about stories that surprise us. Scientific studies have shown that humans are drawn to novelty, and the brain releases dopamine when something unexpected happens. Sardas, at ninety-three, capitalizes on this psychological phenomenon with a rich tapestry of tales that explore life’s oddities, both mundane and extraordinary. His characters, whether they are long-lost friends reuniting in The Three Old Buddies or an ambitious gambler in The Gambler, all have one thing in common: they face unexpected turns that lead them—and readers—down paths they never imagined. Sardas’ work is akin to sitting around a campfire, where each tale told has a twist that keeps listeners on edge, waiting for what happens next.

At its core, Taking Flight is a collection of short stories that weave together elements of humor, surprise, and poignant reflections on life. Without looking into spoiler territory, each narrative reveals Sardas’ gift for blending his personal experiences with fictional flights of fancy, creating characters who are mavericks and misfits tackling the unpredictability of the human condition. The book’s true charm lies in how it captures the quirks of everyday life while wrapping each story in a mystery or surprise, often leaving readers with much to ponder long after they’ve turned the last page.

One of the book’s greatest strengths is its writing style. Sardas’ prose is clean and accessible, allowing the stories to flow naturally without being bogged down by excessive description or overwrought language. Each tale feels fresh, with pacing that keeps readers engaged. Particularly in stories like The Hospedaria, the mix of tension and humor adds a dynamic quality that elevates the narrative. Additionally, the editing is immaculate; there are no glaring errors or awkward phrasing, making for a seamless reading experience. The uniqueness of the stories stands out—few collections offer the same level of unpredictability, and it’s clear that Sardas, despite his age, remains a youthful and imaginative storyteller.

Perhaps my favorite part of the book is in Carlos’s Wedding, where a seemingly routine drive turns into a suspense-filled confrontation with military officers. The story is a perfect encapsulation of Sardas’ talent for building tension and flipping the narrative on its head in an unexpected yet satisfying way. It’s this ability to blend the ordinary with the extraordinary that makes the collection so compelling.

While the quirky and unconventional nature of the stories will resonate with fans of short fiction, readers who prefer more traditional, plot-driven narratives may find it a bit challenging. However, those who love works by authors like Roald Dahl or Gabriel García Márquez, particularly in the way they weave mystery, humor, and strangeness, will revel in Taking Flight.

Sardas’ collection makes a strong contribution to the literary world, offering a unique voice that blends life’s simple pleasures with the complexities of human nature. His stories float like butterflies—beautiful, fleeting, and often surprising in their flight path. Sardas has gifted us a work that reminds us that no matter how mundane life may seem, there’s always the potential for the unexpected, waiting just around the corner. Taking Flight is a refreshing breath of literary air, sure to enthrall those who embrace its whimsical yet thought-provoking tales.

  1. I love everything about this! Indeed, we all love being surprised. But it’s also really hard to write great short fiction. And I love that at 93, the author’s thriving!
