The hospitality industry is fast-paced, ever-evolving, and requires constant adaptation to changing consumer preferences, technologies, and service standards. For professionals looking to excel, keeping up with best practices and emerging trends is key. A great way to stay ahead is by turning to industry-specific literature. Here are some books recommended by experts in the industry.

Explore Hospitality Leadership Secrets

I’d recommend reading The Heart of Hospitality: Great Hotel and Restaurant Leaders Share Their Secrets by Micah Solomon. This book is an amazing collection of strategies and secrets from some of the industry’s most successful leaders, including the brains behind Virgin Hotels and Ritz-Carlton.

What I found particularly impactful about this book was its emphasis on customer service trends and how small, measured steps can significantly impact a business’ success. Different types of customer experiences are examined, and there’s a deep dive into the hiring and training processes too.

I’ve personally drawn considerable wisdom from this book and enjoyed learning through the anecdotes and stories presenting real-world problems and solutions within our industry.

It’s one of my favorite books, which gave me a deeper understanding of the hospitality sector and has helped shape my approach when working with hospitality clients.

Embrace Enlightened Hospitality Principles

I highly recommend Setting the Table by Danny Meyer to all hospitality professionals. This book profoundly influenced my approach to guest service and team management. Meyer’s concept of “enlightened hospitality”—prioritizing employees first, then guests, community, suppliers, and finally investors—revolutionized how I structure operations.

After implementing Meyer’s principles at our resort, we saw remarkable improvements. For example, we started hosting monthly “family meals” where staff from all departments dined together, fostering a sense of unity. This led to better interdepartmental cooperation and a 30% increase in positive guest feedback about staff attentiveness.

Meyer’s emphasis on creating emotional connections with guests inspired us to personalize experiences in small but meaningful ways. We began keeping notes on returning guests’ preferences and surprising them with tailored touches, like having their favorite snacks waiting in their room. This approach significantly boosted our repeat booking rates.

Building a Thriving Business Through Customer Service and Community Engagement

As the founder of a catering company, I would recommend “Setting the Table” by Danny Meyer. It details how hospitality and customer service are the backbone of a successful business.

We make customer satisfaction our top priority. For example, we survey guests after each event and review feedback to improve. We also have daily meetings where we address any concerns. As a result, over 90% of our clients return and refer us to others.

Focusing on our local community has been key. Sponsoring a festival required donating our services but we gained new clients and partnerships. Now we collaborate regularly, which expands our reach.

Reach out to groups in your area and offer your unique skills. Provide value without obligation. This goodwill strengthens relationships, which often lead to new opportunities. Our community work has solidified our reputation, enabling us to raise prices without losing customers. Engaging stakeholders has strengthened our brand and bottom line.
