My Lost Pages

My Lost Pages, penned by Sneha Sabu, is a collection of twenty-five eclectic poems featuring diverse themes.

Review

Are you content with the mundanities of life, finding joy in everyday occurrences? Alternatively, do you ponder the deeper questions of life, nurturing the philosopher inside you? No matter your proclivities, My Lost Pages by Sneha Sabu has something for you. This collection of twenty-five poems, each one boasting a different writing style, explores myriad topics.

The poems follow a conversational tone with no apparent rhyme, akin to a monologue the poet delivers to her readers. This strategy creates a free flow in expressing Sabu’s thoughts and emotions, generating a unique rhythm that varies from poem to poem. Sabu creates vivid imagery with the simplest words, an aspect exemplified by Dew Drops and The Shooting Star. The serene visuals of Lake Tekapo transport the readers to the beautiful lakeside. The Inspiration or Thought section accompanying each piece lets the reader compare the poet’s motivations with their own interpretations.

The collection amazes the readers with its distinctively broad scope. A few poems seem to have an everyday theme with no deeper meaning. For example, Things that Make Me Laugh describes the hilarious antics of the host and the guests while spending an uncomfortable night after a sumptuous feast. Rooted in Sabu’s real-life experience, Paranormal and The Room that Saved convey similar humor. Poems like Carbon and Down Memory Lane are odes to fond memories of glorious days. On the other hand, The Loan Shark highlights a distressed individual haunted by red tape and the demand for bribery. The Wild Fire sets a somber mood for the readers, featuring a harrowing evacuation scene.

Many poems, however, have a more profound theme, including From the Ashes I Rise and The Blue Woman, both narrating an oppressed individual’s struggles against discrimination. Have Some Mercy on Me is an eye-opener to the pains of the terminally ill who want nothing but respite from this world. Surviving the Pandemic paints a succinct picture of the pandemic days, featuring both despair and hope in equal measures. My Mirror Reflection and My Big Fat Bum explore recognizing one’s self-worth irrespective of outward appearance. The Woodcutter’s Son and Two Logs of Wood are probably two of the most impacting poems. The first one describes how human greed callously destroys the environment, making it uninhabitable for future generations. The second one explores the fleeting nature of human life, noting how everyone gradually sinks into oblivion with no one around to remember them.

Some of the pieces are seemingly straightforward but hide an underlying meaning. Carbon highlights the inherent unity of all life forms. The Change Warrior symbolizes resilience and rebirth, showcasing an eagle shedding its worn beak and bedraggled feathers. The Bee and the Fly highlights how some have a positive attitude while others invariably flock toward negativity. The File in the Bin, talking about a deleted file still waiting in the recycle bin, explores our tendency to discard perfectly reusable materials simply because they might be out of fashion. The Room that Saved, underneath its hilarity, explains that we should listen to ourselves and prioritize our needs.

With such a vast collection of poems that hold some message for every reader, My Lost Pages will appeal to anyone who loves contemplating life’s mysteries through poetry.

  2. I really like the idea, and I’m constantly seeking ways to find beauty in the mundane, and I’m glad the author is joining the voices who decry what we are doing to the environment.
