- About the Author: J Heinen is an independent children's book author, illustrator, and creator of the "Monsters Help Too!" series — a world where the monsters under the bed and in the closet aren't scary at all. They're helpful. In his debut picture book, a boy discovers Nerms and Tings, quirky little cavemen-like creatures who show up uninvited and help him find his lost flashlight. With hand-drawn characters, vivid storytelling, and a message that even the things we fear can surprise us, the series has grown to two books and a growing community of young readers and families. J Heinen collaborates with his brother JJ Sharks writes and every page himself, self-publishing through Amazon KDP. Since publishing his initial book using he limited artistic talent, the series has been further helped along with better and enhanced artistic work and graphics (though you can still see some of the old, art splattered throughout the series.) Beyond the books, he brings his monsters to life through animated YouTube content, Instagram, and a dedicated fan experience — because he believes stories shouldn't stop at the last page. Based in San Antonio, Texas, J Heinen is passionate about independent publishing, creative storytelling, and proving that you don't need a big publisher to build something kids love. Inspired by his brother when they were kids who pretended his hands were little monsters and there were little monsters under his bed, but all friendly. When he's not writing about little monsters, he's probably thinking about writing monsters.

- Awards, reviews, press releases, and other relevant information: None, I am a newbie!!
- Genre: Children's Adventure Books and Imagination
- Did you love reading books when you were little? Why or why not?: Yes. My Dad calls me "the reader" and says I am smarter for it. Maybe he is right, maybe he is not, but I appreciate his support!
- At what age did you start reading books? What were your best memories of that time?: Reading at home near the fire place, it was a warm and safe experience. My childhood was humble, safe, and warm home full of love and full of reading.
- What was the first book you loved reading? Why?: My favorite series was Chronicles of Narnia. It is an amazing adventure in another world.
- When did you first think about writing your first book? Why?: I actually wrote the first book in my series 7 years ago, but I did not have the skill to generate all the art for each page and very much struggled along the way.
- What was the greatest obstacle you've encountered when you were writing your book? What made you overcome it?: Wanting creative and thoughtful art throughout the book. Fortunately (and sometimes unfortunately) technical advances have allowed me to bring my words to pictures. I know that not all the "new art" can be considered amazing, but for me it allowed me to express my stories and have those words come to life.
- What pieces of advice can you give aspiring authors? What worked for you?: Keep holding on. I wanted to quite. I wrote my first book about ten times. I hand drew over and over page after page. I then used a scanner and uploaded it onto a computer, trying to edit. I FOUGHT kdp sizing, cover issues, and all kinds of frustration. I just kept working through it. My books are NOT perfect but I love the story and the only backing I have ever had was my brother. Keep dreaming and keep trying.
- Who are the authors or what are the books that had the greatest influence in your own writing? Why?: Dr. Seuss of course. I like the rhymes! I like the style! I like the adventure. He is amazing.
- What are your current or future writing plans? What can readers further expect from you?: I want to continue my series. I also want to pivot it to an adult audience more as a graphic novel in the another world. I am not sure yet how the community will respond to my series as I have had limited reads, but hopeful for great feedback.
- Do you offer a free book copy to interested readers?: Yes. Interested readers, please use the contact form.
