It all starts with the unexpected death of King Navor, the love of Sitnalta’s life. In her grief, she makes a wish. A wish that changes everything.
Queen Sitnalta and her children, Princess Audrina and Prince Lucas, are devastated after losing Navor. Sitnalta becomes a shell of herself. Lucas returns to the Island of Coralnoss with Zayna to resume his work there. A heartbroken Audrina remains in the palace, grappling with her father’s death, her mother’s all-encompassing grief, and coming to terms with her upcoming role as the queen. Things take a turn when a dark creature starts haunting the kingdom. Unlike the trolls of the past, this creature hunts humans. To his shock, Lucas finds himself connected to this creature through one of his dreams. When he sees the reflection of his dream self, he is horrified. While investigating an attack in Duke Ipsinki’s duchy, Ipsinki finds a scrap of cloth that propels him to leave for the capital immediately to discuss matters with Sitnalta.
Who is this creature? Will Sitnalta and the others be able to stop him? Most importantly, will she find happiness again?
The Depth of Darkness by Alisse Lee Goldenberg is the final book of The Children of Colonodona series. It also concludes the Sitnalta series. The Depth of Darkness is a heart-stopping book. The characters are made to question their choices and wishes at every turn. This made me realize that each and every action of ours has consequences and reflect on my decisions. In this final book in the series, Goldenberg makes us relive the moments from all the past books. She does this with such mastery that even people who have not read those novels will feel nostalgic.
Alisse Lee Goldenberg is a master storyteller. Her vivid writing style made Sitnalta’s grief palpable. I could feel Audrina’s trepidation at the prospect of wearing the crown one day and facing the judgment of her people for her love for Gertrude. I am proud of the way she finally handled this. Salazar is great. His bond with the royal family, especially Audrina, Gertrude, Lucas, and Zayna, is heartwarming. The way he stood by them is brave. Zayna’s unwavering support for Lucas is admirable. Ipsinki and Gwendolyn are amazing. Their decision at the end astonished me. Mika’s loyalty is praiseworthy. I loved his sense of humor at the most inopportune of times. Salomea, the elderly seamstress, completely won me over. Her astute observations about both life and fashion made me admire her. Gerald is a pillar of support for everyone.
Sitnalta’s and Navor’s love story is epic. Without giving away spoilers, all I want to say is that they made my heart smile. Even after all the years, their love never faded. I loved the snippets from their youth.
Overall, I truly loved The Depth of Darkness by Alisse Lee Goldenberg. It is a fitting ending to the series. Full of action, romance, magic, heartache, and drama, I highly recommend this book to all fantasy and romance fans.
