Review
Melanie Flynn’s The Lost Lamb is a riveting thriller with a unique twist. The novel had me in its thrall till the very end.
Old wounds do not heal easily, especially when kept hidden from everyone. NYPD Detective Calum Reese has one such deep dark secret. Twenty-two years ago, his baby sister, Emmie, went missing under his watch. He never fully revealed the details of that fateful day to anyone. For over two decades, he has been haunted by grief and guilt. Then comes psychic private investigator Rylee Scott. They cross paths while investigating the Toy Maker Killer case. Rylee and Calum become reluctant partners. With her unique psychic powers, she is the first one to discover Calum’s secret. In the months following the capture of the Toy Maker Killer, they develop a close camaraderie with a dash of attraction. Calum finally musters up the courage to seek Rylee’s help in investigating his long-lost sister’s case. Together, they travel to his hometown in Blue Ridge, Georgia, to unravel the threads of a case whose trail ended twenty-two years ago. To add to that, a copycat killer starts murdering people in a manner similar to the Toy Maker. The only difference is that these killings are much more brutal. This gives the real Toy Maker an alibi to plead his innocence and request his release from prison.
What happened to Emmie? Will Calum and Rylee be able to discover the truth? What about the Toy Maker? Will our dynamic duo be able to uncover the mystery of the new killings and be able to stop the original Toy Maker Killer from being set free?
Even though The Lost Lamb is the second book in the Psychic Detective, Rylee Scott series, the novel stands alone. Without revealing much from the first book, Flynn gives the reader enough information to enjoy The Lost Lamb, even if they have not read The Toy Maker. Though the nuggets from the first book will definitely make you want to read it. Having read The Toy Maker myself, I highly recommend it.
Melanie Flynn is an expert weaver of tales. I love how she takes us to a small Southern town to solve a decades old cold case. The way Calum and Rylee discovered the truth of that fateful day twenty-two years ago had me gaping.
The Lost Lamb has a great cast of characters. I was completely enmeshed in Calum and Rylee’s lives. I could feel Calum’s grief and palpable guilt at losing his sister. Rylee’s character is undoubtedly unique. I loved getting into her head, especially when she got into the heads of the culprits. I highly enjoyed Rylee and Calum’s bond. I hope this is explored more in the upcoming books. Also, I have to mention Sandra Reese. She surprised me. I loved how her relationship developed with Rylee.
Overall, I really enjoyed The Lost Lamb by Melanie Flynn. The author kept me guessing till the very end. I love how the resolution is not conventional. I really liked how Flynn intrigued us enough to be more than eager for the next book.
I believe fans of crime thrillers and detective mysteries will love Melanie Flynn’s The Lost Lamb.
