Dreams and Metamorphoses is an eclectic anthology of short stories by Fabio Grandi that takes us on a rollercoaster ride through the human psyche.
Fabio Grandi’s Dreams and Metamorphoses is a collection of fourteen short stories. The stories are named The Lake and the Light, The Warmth of Another Mammal, Repugnant Mutant Sewer Freak, Not the End of the World, Oblivion™, Garnet, Everyone’s a Dick, Creatures, Good Boy, Habitual Ritual, What Freezes Around Us, The Tiny Man, All the Things that Speak, and Free, Falling.
The Lake and the Light tells us the story of Tommy, a man who finds himself aboard a spaceship. Tommy has to decide between continuing his journey with the aliens who show him the truth of light and returning to Earth where his fellow humans are bound to mock him. In this story, we learn the true nature of light and the darkness created by us humans. The Warmth of Another Mammal brings to us a bizarre night between an isolated narrator devoid of human contact for 39 days and his cat, Tifa, whom he seems unable to get away from. This story is sure to leave you flabbergasted.
Repugnant Mutant Sewer Freak is the story of a narrator who longs to be a part of society. As he considers himself undesirable, he hides his true self and masquerades as someone he is not so that he is accepted by people. This story shows us the importance of accepting ourselves and seeing the world for what it truly is. In Not the End of the World, the narrator tells us about the time when he and his girlfriend spent three weeks in a Hare Krishna Ashram in Argentina. There, he met a number of people from different countries. Alex is one of them. When he gets it into his head that the world is coming to an end, the entire dynamics of the group changes. This is one of my favorite stories in the collection. It actually kept me thinking about it long after I finished reading it.
In Oblivion™, the narrator has a life-changing experience with Oblivion: A Co-Creative Lucid Dream State™. As per the rules, he is forbidden to contact anyone whose minds he shared while undergoing the dream. His friends, Mack and Liz, feel different to him. The narrator cannot stop himself from going back for more of the experience. This story underscores our growing consumerism and dependence on artificial technology. This actually reminded me of our addiction to social media. Garnet is the story where the narrator comes up with a brilliant story while in a dream. This story made me think about the transient nature of things.
In Everyone’s a Dick, the narrator and his friend, Eliana, meet a guy called at a club. After some time at the club, Eliana and the narrator retire home and continue with partying. When the guy from the club invites them to his house, they go. After some time, the narrator leaves Eliana behind. Yet, he is worried for her. He returns to the house and finds something that will leave the reader astounded. This story is the one that left an indelible mark on my mind. I will never forget it. Creatures is the story of a hunter and his prey. This story shows us that what we desire the most in our lives might not be what we think it is and can ultimately lead to our downfall.
In Good Boy, the narrator and his dog, Solo, go for a walk through a forest. This story makes us ponder the true definition of master and pet. Habitual Ritual reminds us of the day after a raging party. What Freezes Around Us takes us to a world where machines have taken over. They are the benevolent ones who rule a world that is frozen all over. Only the pilgrims seek what is there on the other side of the world. The narrator and his friend fought in the war against the machines. While the narrator acclimated to the post-war frozen world, his friend left society and retreated to the icy wilderness. The narrator is on a quest to find his friend and at least try to bring him back.
The Tiny Man reminds us of any small-town person who leaves his town and discovers a vast wide world. The Tiny Man tells us the story of a small man who spends some time in his own village before leaving to explore the world as there are no wars. When a war takes place, he goes to fight and comes face-to-face with his own father. All the Things that Speak is the longest story in the book. It tells the story of Miranda Severnake, a scientist who finds herself on the wrong side of morality. She is sent to take control of morpheme, a miraculous plant, on behalf of Mr. Reever’s corporation. Miranda tries her best to justify her actions, especially when she finds herself amidst the Ur, a group of people who are very close to nature. All the Things that Speak is an action-packed story that leaves us with a lot of life lessons. It is undoubtedly my favorite one in this anthology of short stories. Free, Falling is the last story of the collection. This story is about a crash that ultimately leads to freedom.
Dreams and Metamorphoses explores a lot of themes. From life, light, and darkness to nature, morality, and humanity, Fabio Grandi’s collection sheds light on all. Grandi is a talented author whose writing has a penchant to make you think. His use of vibrant imagery makes you visualize the most unexpected of things. Grandi’s stories have a dark undertone. Yet, ultimately, they deliver a message that will help you live a life worth living.
Each and every story in Dreams and Metamorphoses is bound to make you ponder the true meaning of life. These stories will make you question things and teach you a lot of things that you never expected to learn. I highly recommend Fabio Grandi’s Dreams and Metamorphoses to fans of magic realism, science fiction, and fantasy. People who enjoy reading short stories that are a tad bizarre yet packed with meaning should definitely give this book a try.
