Review

“So, are you ready to embrace yourself the way you are?”

– Kristina Mänd-Lakhiani

If you are all set to accept yourself with all your seeming imperfections, then grab your copy of Kristina Mänd-Lakhiani’s Becoming Flawesome: The Key to Living an Imperfectly Authentic Life right away.

We work hard to hide all our flaws and conform to society’s expectations of us. All of us strive for perfection. In the process, we lose our true selves and live phony lives. Becoming Flawesome: The Key to Living an Imperfectly Authentic Life by Kristina Mänd-Lakhiani is a personal growth and transformative book that aims to help us regain our authentic selves. This amazing book hopes to aid us in finding ourselves and building a truly happy and successful life.

Becoming Flawesome: The Key to Living an Imperfectly Authentic Life is divided into eight parts. Each part is further divided into easy-to-understand sections which are followed by a part called “Reflection Points.” The first part focuses on our inherent need to be perfect. I like how the author comes up with the term “Hermione Syndrome.”  Just like Harry Potter’s friend, Hermione, some of us have the debilitating issue of doing everything to eradicate our flaws. Though this might seem to be a good thing, it has repercussions that can upend our lives. Also, I like how the author gives us an alternative to hustling. The second part talks about the absoluteness of authenticity. Mänd-Lakhiani fearlessly talks about buzzwords, vulnerability, and delusions. There are many buzzwords floating around in our era. Due to all the connotations attached to them, we overlook their real meanings. Mänd-Lakhiani invites us to look beyond all the buzz and into the true meaning of words. I love how she talks about the difference between true vulnerability and crocodile tears. The third part is about switching off auto-pilot and living life with awareness. This section teaches us a lot and is key to our transformation process. Part four focuses on the art of imperfection. Mänd-Lakhiani’s views on us having different avatars and defense mechanisms are indeed insightful. The way she explains how some people use love as a weapon and how our sacrifice is often pointless gave me a lot of food for thought. Parts five, six, and seven are about honesty, kindness, and courage. All of this is required to live flawesomely. I like how Mänd-Lakhiani cautions us about practicing honesty safely. The difference between self-care and self-love is also a significant concept. The last section is about accepting all our flaws to live a truly happy and successful life.

The “Reflection Points” are my favorite parts of the book. They contain exercises based on the section that they follow. The exercises are simple and relevant. As they do not take up too much time and are not very complex, one can easily integrate them into their daily life.

Kristina Mänd-Lakhiani’s Becoming Flawesome: The Key to Living an Imperfectly Authentic Life presents us with a life-changing message in simple words. Mänd-Lakhiani uses the second-person point of view and often breaks the fourth wall to pose questions to the readers. The charts and the expanded emotional vocabulary are all very useful materials. This engages the readers and makes the content relatable. It is clear that a lot of research was done by the author from the detailed citations and the to-the-point quotes. Through her writing, it is evident that Kristina Mänd-Lakhiani is a truly talented and well-versed individual. There is a lot to learn from her. I love how she shares anecdotes from her personal life without deviating from the topic at hand. Her Soviet childhood, seventeen years of staying in Asia, and her relationships with her children, ex-husband, and parents, among other things give us an insight into her journey of personal growth.

I have learned a lot from Becoming Flawesome: The Key to Living an Imperfectly Authentic Life. My favorite takeaway from the book is the message that we cannot compel ourselves to transform. The right advice only works at the right time with the right mindset.

Becoming Flawesome: The Key to Living an Imperfectly Authentic Life by Kristina Mänd-Lakhiani is a life-changing book. For a book that implores us to accept our flaws, it is devoid of any flaws. I highly recommend it to anyone who is willing to go on a transformative journey of personal growth. People who wish to live truly happy and fulfilling lives should definitely give this book a try.

Reading is my passion, and writing is my compulsion. I started reading from a very early age. Since then, I have not stopped. I have garnered this addiction from my father. I have always loved reading his books. As you can see, books are my world. I escape this world to traverse the world of my books. Naturally, I have an affinity to create worlds of my own. There are thoughts constantly swirling in my head. These are the thoughts that I jot down. Sometimes, they become poems while sometimes stories. More often than not, they are just reviews of the plethora of books I read and the things I do.

  1. Self-care has become another industry, so I’m all for self-love. It’s a hard balance between improving oneself and falling into Hermione syndrome LOL.
    What a useful book!
