This morning the sky is as wide as a cave
As wide as an early dancefloor.
    I am bloated with expecting.
The early light is a guest uninvited - you ask me what I'm looking at.
The two of them walk ahead, veins showing and happy lashes winking Morse code back and forth.
A call to arms or something sweet and incendiary.

At the beach the thick air sits around us. We breathe with a catch
the stones rock, a lullaby pull,
A new Orleans March, alternating weak and strong with a spitty exhale,
a drunken knowing that nothing is staying in place.
The sea in sour lungs and there is no harbour at all.

Our lips are fluffed with college conversations, laughs
from nice white teeth and loose remarks, an eager flood that
Spills all the things that we are, new and borrowed and becoming.
    Later, there, we flattened grass
    And flailed about and felt,
At first, at last. Once more.
We do not see the naked shore, there is no need.
