The man with the pit in his chest

BREW Poetry Award Nominee - Open Category / by The Contributing Writer / 311 views

  • Listing ID: 36534
  • Poetry Author's Name: Andrés Rodríguez Pérez
  • Poem: There was a pit inside a dismal chest,
    dejected, barren land surrounded by
a crumbling, splintered ribcage. Far from blessed
the owner of the pit had deemed his dry
and trampled soul. In fact, he chose a worse
belief upon his fate to clarify
the hollowness of his insides: a curse
must have been cast upon his heart at birth,
professed: "What you most want will not be yours,
for love will never bow down to your worth."
Perhaps the pit would have absorbed him whole
if he had kept his heart under the earth
for all his years to come. And yet, the soul
that digs its heels into the ground and stands
    absurdly hopeful, bordering the hole,
endures against the winds of despondence
and secretly grows larger than the void
that cruelly feeds on famine of romance.
For love is more than just a Polaroid,
it's more than what the photographs contoured,
that much he knew, and he had grown annoyed
of thinking he deserved less. And, somehow,
    another soul appeared and reassured
that from the pit he would be free from now:
"I am, you are, we are. The curse is cured."
