  • Poem: On My Way

On my way to the end of the day
    Sometimes sprinting, sometimes stumbling
Catching my breath, forgetting my direction.
The sidewalk speaks, tells me the way
Not as steady as I used to be
    Stopping at every streetlight, mumbling
What’s on the other side? Is it really a better place?
Scaling mountains all my life, learning, living,
And now it’s time to climb back down.
Still catching the moments the sun streaks
between the cloudy sky to shine upon me
Sauntering toward the sunset, smiling as I near
The horizon blinded by its blazing light.
It wanes away, becomes a sliver, and then it’s gone.
  • Poet's Bio: Mike Marks was schooled during the Cold War/fallout shelter era, the first of the baby boomers. He was taught writing structures by poet laureate Gwendolyn Brooks in Chicago, later earning the first Creative Writing bachelor’s degree ever awarded at Kansas State University.
