  • Listing ID: 36467
  • Poetry Author's Name: Cassandra Caverhill
  • Poem: I let him lead the route: left here, right there.
He points in case the wind snatches his voice.
We follow curlicue crescents & roundabout
roads. Crosswalk wait until it’s safe to cut
six lanes in dark, our safety sashes blinking
sickly green. On a trail fenced from freeway,
we ride a steady clip while cars rumble
in acceleration. Sedges sway from our stride
in rainwater ditches. My front lamp’s dim
but Aaron’s shines bright, pushing back umbra,
    our figures chiaroscuro against chain-link.
The moon wanes, its fullness one day gone.
Our chains click click with cricket song.
I’m breathless, though it’s not from exertion.
