  • Listing ID: 36477
  • Poetry Author's Name: Keira
  • Name of Educational Institution: Valley View Secondary School
  • Poem: In face of death we are sworn to conform,
To speak on behalf of the life we lived.
How can Death expect us to not be miffed,
In a moment where we are forced to perform?
We are pushed to a stage, and dangled on the border,
And meant to approach this in an accepting manner.
To put our entire lives on a banner,
Is a meaningless and unjust order.
We succumb to frugality as the words in our minds mingle,
The words are abundant, the possibilities are never-ending.
Our final remarks are nothing if not daunting,
As if someone is challenging us at a fatal moment to remain lingual.
Everything in life makes their last mark,
When storms cease their brew, lightning strikes.
When vines retire, their posies spike,
And when planktons startle, their bodies spark.
Nature is permitted to make a lasting impact,
    A beautiful and admirable remark.
Why is it then, that humans must embark,
On a performative journey, forced to remain intact.
Words can cut, as does Death’s scythe,
And I refuse to accept his game of wordplay.
There is so much left for me to say,
A single sentence to finalise my life can’t possibly suffice.
