  • Poem: I Once Knew a Girl Who Died
And I shake the shoulders of our memories,
breathe life into the yawning liminal space,
study her language with a magnifying glass,
look through the moth-eaten holes of its fabric
like little windows until my vision grows tired
and nothing appears quite right. What could
the world have offered? If the sky with its
unsmiling mouth had wrapped you in a sunburst,
would it have thawed the white around your throat?
What whistling melody could the pink trumpet-tree
have sung to make you sit and listen? Just for a little while,
just long enough to color your cheeks awake,
sprouting inside your lungs to flower in your breath,
as you take in the beautiful synchronicity of all things.
