  • Poem: soft once / then sharpened / first heartbreak grew its own fangs / a mouth learns to shape itself around loss / and still / something leaks / the enclosure can’t hold / September in the veins / or August in the bones / the body remembers / not with clarity / but with insistence / ache as structure / ache as scaffolding / each sentence a tooth / each pause a claw / space around it gapes like silence in a room / if you were lost / would you still return to this small enclosure / what does it matter / the lines always return to paper / they carry despair seasoned in salt / carried across / they carry the dream that can’t remember itself / they carry survival / catastrophe familiar / not symmetrical / not closed / only this reckoning / to press forward anyway / i wear ache as language / tomorrow’s residue / what holds here is both / feral and deliberate / a body of sentences / pressed shoulder to shoulder / restless.
  • Poet's Bio: Waverly Vernon (she/they) is a writer and interdisciplinary artist from Florida currently studying at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Their work explores politics, religious deprogramming, and trauma, transforming personal experience into connection and dialogue. They are the author of the micro chapbook “soft-skinned”, published by Bottlecap Press. Their poetry has also been published by Wildscape Literary Journal, Creation Magazine, Arcana Poetry Press, among others.
