Contrary to popular misconception, voice acting is not a new profession. In fact, it has been there since the very beginning of humanity. Humans have been passing on their knowledge and history over generations through the art of storytelling. It is thanks to the rich heritage of oral tradition that the story of humanity is alive. Voice acting plays a very important role in this. As children, we grow up listening to our parents and grandparents make stories come alive through their acting. The animations that we watch on TV become our friends. Their voices become an unforgettable reminder of our childhoods, even if we never know the real person behind the voice. It is very natural for children to want to become the voice of their favorite cartoon characters. Some even try to enact them at home. This may very well mean that they are budding voice actors. However, there is not much easily available information about the profession of voice acting out there. Linda easily solves this with her book, So You Want To Be A Voice Actor.

A part of the So You Want To Be A… series, So You Want To Be A Voice Actor by Linda Soules maps out the ins and outs of voice acting. She starts the book by explaining who a voice actor is. Soules underscores the importance of the voice. She then moves on to talk about a voice actor’s work, their place of work, and the tools of the trade. The best and the toughest aspects of the job are outlined. Even the most surprising thing about the voice acting profession is talked about. The people a voice actor works with and, most importantly, how a voice actor makes a difference by helping people are discussed. Soules talks about the qualities of a voice actor and the unexpected things required of the profession. She even dedicates a section to famous voice actors. I find this part to be very inspiring. 

My favorite part is where Soules gives us a detailed breakdown of a voice actor’s day. She beautifully enmeshes us in the life of a voice actor. I think any aspiring voice actor would love to experience this. Also, I love the fun facts section. I really enjoyed the trivia. Soules is thoughtful enough to list the things aspiring voice actors can do as a way of preparation. She even lists a number of helpful resources toward the end of the book. The glossary of voice acting terms is really thoughtful as well. Soules makes readers wonder if they want to be voice actors.

Every other day, children change their minds about what they want to grow up to be. A new profession intrigues them every other day. Linda Soules’ So You Want To Be A… series comes in handy here. The books in this series answer questions about different career paths. So You Want To Be A Voice Actor is the one about voice acting. Soules uses a simple and vivid writing style to make the career path of voice acting viable for young readers. The colorful illustrations used make the book even more interesting. I can vouch for this as the book easily held my toddler sister’s attention and made her want to know more about voice acting. I appreciate Soules for making it clear that the illustrations are created with the assistance of AI. Nevertheless, the ideas behind them are hers alone, and she should be fully credited for them. 

I really enjoyed reading So You Want To Be A Voice Actor by Linda Soules. I happily recommend it to all budding voice actors, be they children, teenagers, or adults.
