Salem, Virginia, becomes the center of human decadence in this Appalachian gothic horror anthology.

Review

Ten stories. Ten flawed humans. One unholy chapel, one decrepit church turned sex store, one mysterious kugel fountain, and one town: Salem, Virginia—an infinite amount of temptation and moral decay. Signs of The Fall by Sean Price is an anthology of ten horror novelettes set in the heart of Appalachia. This is not what you think when you think Appalachian horror, but something perhaps more terrifying: the corruption of the human spirit.

I found three main assets that make this book stand out. First, its originality. The Appalachian region is full of stereotypes and of horror folklore: mothman and other cryptids, the rules of the woods, and mountain witchcraft. However, Price presents us with a much scarier kind of horror: the one of real humans facing real temptation. The stories do have a supernatural tint, and it’s surprisingly not the classic Appalachian tropes.

Character development is the second brilliant aspect of this book. The stories are interconnected, with youth pastor Peter Merritt at their center. But the author did a fantastic job with all the characters. The diversity is immense: from an Air Force Sensor Operator turned paralegal to a “nice” guy trapped in a hyperfeminist work environment. Most of them are outcasts, all of them are perfectly construed. My favorite one was Rebba: a hacker desperate for money and for requited love.

The atmosphere, both autumnal and mundane, is perfect for the stories, and the author uses imaginative ways to create an immersive reading experience, such as writing in code. The connections and symbols are plenty (a painting, a mysterious Celtic symbol), and I’ll leave the joy of unraveling this terrifying matryoshka to the readers. It was, for me, an aha moment of delight each time I deciphered another connection or found another Easter egg. I also enjoyed the circularity of the narrative, with the last story revealing a question that lingers since the first pages.

Thirdly, the author shows moral decline with a rawness that borders on brash. I understand how this can easily be considered a flaw by some readers. The author broaches very hard and controversial topics, such as suicide, child abuse, sex work, and incest. This, and the fact that religion is at the core of the ten stories, might overwhelm some readers.

However, the narrative style fits the topics perfectly. It’s descriptive enough to make it terrifying, and by the format itself, short enough to be tolerable. The hint of fantasy allows the minimum distance required to let the reader breathe.

Fear not, Price also introduces enough humor to make us smirk amidst the horror. There are also important lessons in the book, such as “Do not judge someone by the nature of their fall. Measure the man by when and how he rises again.”

Signs of The Fall is perfect for readers looking for an innovative horror experience, a different side to Appalachian horror, or unabashed self-examination of one’s flaws. It’s also an original and unadulterated piece of fiction that sets Sean Price on the radar of authors whose trajectory is worth following.
