Review
The Brighter The Light The Darker The Shadow by Verlin Darrow is a novel of many layers. It is more than a murder mystery or a courtroom drama. The spiritual teachings enmeshed in this fast-paced legal thriller makes the book a rare read.
A near-death experience propels Kade Tobin to leave his past behind and embark on a spiritual path. One thing leads to another, and Kade finds himself at the helm of a community. As the spiritual teacher of the Brethren of Congruence, he dedicates his time to helping as many people as possible. Frank Dawson, a member of the Brethren, leaves behind his land to the community upon his death. His relatives contest Frank’s will. This is just the beginning of Kade’s troubles. One morning, he wakes up to his dog’s barking. Upon further investigation, he discovers the dead body of a young woman lying in the Meadow near his yurt. He finds himself increasingly involved with the ensuing police investigation. When the body of another young woman is found near his yurt, Kade becomes the prime suspect. To add to things, the District Attorney is the mother of Susan Burke, one of the members of the Brethren on Congruence who joined the community at the chagrin of her mother. It doesn’t help that Kade has secrets of his own.
Who killed the women? Will the real murderer be found? Will Kade be able to prove his innocence? Most importantly, will he be able to stay true to his spiritual path and help those around him?
The Brighter The Light The Darker The Shadow is not merely a book. It is an experience. Verlin Darrow is a master storyteller. Very few authors are able to intersperse spiritual teachings in a high-stakes murder mystery. Darrow does this effortlessly. Kade’s teachings about the universe and how everything is just as the universe plans inspired me. I learned a lot from him.
Kade is an enigmatic character. Darrow does not glorify him as a spiritual leader. He portrays him as a human with vulnerabilities. He is depicted as a man a little further along his spiritual path than most others. Nevertheless, he is a man who can be easily duped. Even when he is in imminent peril, he does his best to help others. His stint at the prison warmed my heart. He talked to the convicts and was invested in making their lives better. He truly cared for the members of his community. Phil Karanos is my favorite. He is an amazing attorney and a great friend. I loved his performance in the court. I really enjoyed the courtroom scenes. Martha is a sweetheart. I would love to know more about her past. Detective Bill Cullen is a good detective. He did surprise many times. McCall and Hernandez were typical cops. Detective Quinn and Ann Marin will definitely surprise you. I was glad watching them unravel in court. DA Marion Burke was also well-portrayed as someone in a position of power, yet completely biased against someone. Darrow shows us how easily corruption and bias creep into investigations.
Darrow had me completely engaged. I felt like I was there with Kade as he found himself in the thick of a murder investigation. I have to say there was a point in the courtroom when I myself began doubting Kade. My heart stopped for a moment at that time.
I thoroughly enjoyed Verlin Darrow’s The Brighter The Light The Darker The Shadow. I learned a lot from this novel. I highly recommend The Brighter The Light The Darker The Shadow by Verlin Darrow to fans of legal thrillers and murder mysteries. Anyone interested in gaining some spiritual knowledge while being entertained by a thrilling courtroom drama will love this book.
