Review

Accused Again by Michael J. Kundu is a gripping legal thriller that made me hold my breath till the very end.

Imagine being wrongfully imprisoned for a crime you never committed. Then, once you are free, you find yourself being framed again. In Accused Again, Michael Fletcher finds himself in such an impossible predicament. Twenty-six years ago, he was put behind bars for a murder committed by someone else. Only a few weeks after his release, he witnesses the suicide of his former prison guard, Jack Feller. Before his demise, Jack confessed a truth that completely upended Michael’s world. As Michael decides to leave the country and start life anew, he is apprehended at the airport. To his utter despair and shock, he is yet again wrongfully suspected of a murder that was actually a suicide. Vincent Graham, the defense attorney who had failed him more than two decades ago, vows to prove his innocence this time.

Who framed Michael? Will Vincent be able to set him free, or will he find himself wrongfully convicted yet again? Most importantly, how will he manage the psychological toll of standing in the same courtroom facing a similar jury once again?

The second book of The Michael Fletcher series, Accused Again, picks up right where the first book left off. Michael now knows who the true culprit is. He is also aware of the underlying corruption behind it all. Though this disturbs him deeply, he is all set to start life anew and get adjusted to an advanced world. His world shatters when he is accused again of a crime he did not commit. Kundu masterfully portrays his psyche. We can feel his pain and fear of being imprisoned again. His cautious hope and trust in Vincent is well-depicted. The way he found humor in the most despairing of times won me over. I really liked the way Kundu showcased Michael’s initiative in adjusting to a vastly different world from what he was used to.  In a very short time, Michael became very close to me. Vincent Graham is a well-made character as well. He is guilt-stricken for his inability to save Michael all those years ago. Now, he is experienced. I loved how he put together the case. His closing statement won my heart. Vincent’s mention of Alice intrigued me about her. I hope we get to meet her in the next book. Mason was another character who left a mark. The big, burly bailiff is one of a kind. Both Judge Vernon and Judge Carter are well-portrayed. To be honest, Judge Carter surprised me in the end. Among the jury, I loved Hiroshi Yokohama the most. I was repelled by Günter Frings. However, his presence was very much necessary to highlight the importance of an impartial jury.

It is evident that Michael J. Kundu is well-versed in the court proceedings. He completely immersed me in the courtroom drama. From the jury selection to the conviction, he meticulously depicted everything. Every bit of the trial is showcased in minute detail. I love how he intersperses Michael’s state of mind and the jury members’ ways of thinking in the narrative. This made the story all the more intriguing.

I really liked the concept of Goldilocks planets. The way Kundu introduced the need for a peaceful and harmonious world is applause-worthy. Through Raj Patel and Ali Khan, Kundu beautifully showcased the possibility of living together despite inherent differences.

I recommend Accused Again by Michael J. Kundu to fans of legal thrillers and courtroom dramas. I am eager to read the next book in this series.

Reading is my passion, and writing is my compulsion. I started reading from a very early age. Since then, I have not stopped. I have garnered this addiction from my father. I have always loved reading his books. As you can see, books are my world. I escape this world to traverse the world of my books. Naturally, I have an affinity to create worlds of my own. There are thoughts constantly swirling in my head. These are the thoughts that I jot down. Sometimes, they become poems while sometimes stories. More often than not, they are just reviews of the plethora of books I read and the things I do.

  1. Learning from stories of legal endurance is a valuable way to understand the strength of the human spirit.

  2. The story feels deeply moving and frustrating in the best way. Watching a man who already lost twenty-six years to a wrongful conviction be accused again makes the courtroom tension hit harder, pulling you into his fight for justice, dignity, and truth against a system that failed him before.
