Unbroken: Life Outside the Lines by Adriene Caldwell beautifully underscores the inner strength and resilience of humanity. In her memoir, Caldwell bravely brings to us the details of her childhood and early adulthood.
Subjected to the instability of her schizophrenic mother and the indifference of her otherwise loving aunts and uncles, Adriene had to grow up way before her time. When her brother was born, she became his protector. However, her mother abused her without anyone stepping in to protect her. Adriene worked hard to achieve academic success even though she grew up in an unorthodox household. Then came the time when Marygold, Adriene’s own mother, threatened to kill her. This made little Adriene take matters into her own hands. She decided to create her own path in life.
Will Adriene be able to escape her past? Or, will she let it haunt her for the rest of her life?
The book starts off with a bang with Adriene barely saving her life. Had it not been for her jammed gun, she would have succumbed to death. This explosive beginning had me invested in her story from the very start. Adriene leaves nothing to the imagination. Her vivid writing style completely enmeshed me in her story. It made me feel her pain and resolve to build a better life. I really liked how she included snippets from her psychological evaluation at the beginning of each chapter. It gave me an idea about little Adriene’s mindset. I have to say that the physical abuse checklist illustration provided in Addendum 2 made me cry. I am at a loss at how such a small child was left to fend off such abuse on her own.
There is no doubt that Adriene Caldwell is a remarkable woman. Few would survive the childhood she had and go on to achieve great things.
Apart from Adriene’s grandmother and her friends, Neil and Jessy, everyone in her life betrayed her in one way or another. Gary disappointed me the most. As for Adriene’s aunts and uncles, I really hoped for them to step up to the plate at some point. To be honest, I expected more from Aunt Rose and Uncle John, as they seem to be good people otherwise. As for Marygold, I wish she had got help earlier. She suffered. However, her plight did not make it okay for her to make Adriene suffer. I truly admire Adriene for being able to look past her mother’s abuse and still feel her love. The Dodds had me horrified. I shudder to think of the children who are put in the care of such people.
Every abuse and every betrayal became a chip in Adriene’s armor. These did not stop her from achieving things that many can only dream about. Yet, the trauma of her past influenced her unwise decisions. The best thing about this memoir is that Adriene does not shy away from sharing her mistakes. She does not justify them. Yet, from the narrative, we can understand the reasoning behind her actions.
Unbroken: Life Outside the Lines by Adriene Caldwell took me on an emotional rollercoaster. I will forever remember Adriene and her story. If she ever pens a follow-up book detailing her journey, I would be the first one to get it. I highly recommend this to fans of heartfelt memoirs.
