Review
Edited by Esperanza Pretila, Lines Worth Remembering is an anthology of award-winning poetry. The book consists of twenty-seven powerful poems. Each has been successful in leaving a deep impact in the heart. This diverse collection explores myriad themes. These include nature, life, love, hope, heartbreak, deception, and resilience.
The very first poem of Lines Worth Remembering is Black Swan by Julie Avis. It is deservedly the overall winner of the BREW Poetry Award of 2024. Avis uses the metaphor of a black swan to masterfully portray the resilience of the human spirit. The poem propels us to never give up. 6ft Deep by Rachel is a heart-wrenching poem. In a few short lines, it shows us how we are put down by our trusted ones.
Margot Amnesty has a number of poems included in this collection. Run out of Room and Its the Electricity portray how deeply we have endangered Mother Nature. Beautiful Breeze, The Bald Eagle, and My Lilypad Trampoline capture the majestic beauty of nature. A Gift of Life, Vignettes of Love, and You’re a Whirlwind showcase heartwarming feelings of love and companionship. Who are You? by Lebi P. Nieves Morán captures the importance of walking away from a toxic relationship in just a few lines. Morán’s Sinking Chest showcases a man’s regret in a quiet yet effective manner.
A Voice of Her Own by Fifi touched my heart. The way it portrays a woman’s fond remembrance of her girlhood when she was strong made me tear up. I found this poem to be highly relatable. Penned by Sneha Sabu, The Phoenix’s fire beautifully showcases the journey of a woman afflicted by hormonal illness. I loved how Sanu captured her joy at finally finding a cure. Crimson Sui’s Glance at First Sight is sweetly relatable and cautionary. Divided into two parts, The Voice by Laura von Rosenberg vividly captures the dilemma of constantly having your mind speak to you. I love Winning Giving’s Random Acts of Kindness. The way it captures the joy of showing kindness to others is heartwarming. Juliana Abrantes’ Rubics of Life beautifully uses a rubics cube to show the various ups and downs of life. To Have Lost by Jeremy Gadd is a gut-wrenching poem that encapsulates the grief of losing one’s loved ones. Rich Santos’ Angel in Disguise beautifully highlights that love is unexpected. We should never let heartbreak keep us from our pursuit of true love. Questions by Ryu Ryu is a short and simple poem that made me smile. It portrays a writer’s dilemma quite effectively. Aymen Second’s The Struggle for Nothing reminded me of the story of Sisyphus.
Ey Dee has won my heart. I loved all of Dee’s pieces included in this collection. You Choose Me and My Love broke my heart. I started them with a smile. By the end, I was holding back my tears. As someone who has always been fascinated by lightning, I found Dee’s Lightning to be highly relatable. Sadness is a poem that will ring true for anyone who has ever gone through depression. Broken Dreams is an ode to all our aspirations that we had to leave unfinished.
Lines Worth Remembering is a stellar collection of poems. Each and every piece is a lyrical expression of the human psyche. The poems are made all the more powerful by the brilliant illustrations. The formatting and editing of this anthology are truly praiseworthy. I highly recommend Lines Worth Remembering to all poetry lovers.
