Leaving Chicago and joining Morningstar Falls Medical Center as an ER doctor was not only Dr. Alder Peony’s means of paying off his debts but also a way of leaving behind his dark past. Located in the remote countryside of Minnesota, the small hospital was only meant to be a pit stop for the good doctor. When there is only one month left of his tenure, Comet Goodwin shows up in the sky. The appearance of the green-tailed celestial body completely upends Alder’s life. Then comes little Willow Rose. Though a stranger, Alder felt an uncanny affinity toward her. She unexpectedly gets enmeshed in his life. To add to this, a dangerous, unknown entity haunts the wilderness. It seems nobody is safe from its darkness.
Who is Willow Rose? How is she related to Alder? Will Alder be able to figure out their connection? Most importantly, will they be able to stop the unknown entity’s reign of terror?
M. Kevin Hayden is a master storyteller. He was able to spellbind me from the very beginning of the novel. In fact, I found it difficult to leave the story midway. Hayden creates a milieu that is spookily realistic. His use of imagery is vivid. I felt like I was a part of Alder’s world. It is undeniable that Willow Rose took me on a rollercoaster journey of emotions. My reading experience was enhanced all the more by the playlist of songs. The songs go perfectly with the story. I have to mention the concept of entanglement. I was highly intrigued by the concept.
Even Hayden’s character-building prowess is admirable. Alder is a grown man at thirty-nine years of age. However, his past is full of despair. Losing his father at a young age and then disappointing his angelic adoptive mother with his vices left him stuck in an abyss of self-hatred, unable to move beyond his past. His journey from a broken man to a hero with a purpose had my heart. Willow Rose was adorable. At the mere age of seven, her bravery was beyond her years. She stood with Alder even in the face of horrific danger. Faith was strong and resilient. Her past did not shrink her caring and vibrant personality. I found her love story with Alder to be immensely cute. It was indeed a treat watching two broken souls healing by being there for each other. Russ was another character who left an impact. I admire her optimism and bravado. Mama Curlie was adorable. My heart broke for her. Mr. Benoit and his son, Frank, were great. Even Sheriff Tom, with his limited presence, was able to make his place in my heart. In my opinion, M. Kevin Hayden’s expertise at character-building is truly reflected in the Windigo. Hayden was able to make me feel sad for the soulless creature who wreaked havoc wherever it went.
Willow Rose by M. Kevin Hayden literally gave me goosebumps. I am intrigued by its take on parallel worlds, endings, and new beginnings. This spine-chilling book is well-edited to boot. I am super-eager to read the next book in the series.
I am more than confident that fans of horror and mystery novels will be enthralled by M. Kevin Hayden’s Willow Rose. People who have an affinity for science fiction books with strong characters and a fast pace will find this novel to be a treat as well.
