“The Collectors” by Richard A. Danzig

The Collectors by Richard A. Danzig is a riveting legal thriller that follows Chance Cormac, a brilliant lawyer, as he grapples with three intriguing cases across countries.

Review

Richard A. Danzig is back with the third book in the award-winning Chance Cormac Legal Thrillers series. In The Collectors, the indomitable lawyer, Chance Cormac, is just getting used to life after his former legal clerks, Damian and JR, left the USA for Costa Rica. The good thing is that his best friend and first love, Sally, and her daughter, Melody, are back in his life. The uber-wealthy businessman, Warren Zevon, retains him. A year ago, Zevon had purchased a renowned piece of art from the MET. Shockingly, he discovers that the art delivered to him was a forgery. He assigns Chance to the case. However, Chance figures out quite early that things are not how they seem. There are hidden layers to both Zevon and his painting. Meanwhile, Chance is also handling the case of Christian Childs, a well-meaning uncle who is duped by his nephew. On the other side of the ocean, Damian and JR are living the idyllic lives of surfers on the heavenly beaches of Costa Rica. On one of his morning runs, Damian comes across a dead body with missing kidneys. Being the good Samaritans they are, he and JR call the local Tourist Police. Little do they know that this one good act will change their lives forever and put them at unimaginable risk.

Will Chance and his team be able to uncover the truth of Warren Zevon and his painting? Will he be able to get justice for Christian? Most importantly, will they be able to save Damian and JR?

I was thoroughly invested in The Collectors. The book held my attention to the very end. The novel has two major plot lines with a few minor subplots. Despite this, I was never confused. Danzig’s style of writing is clear and vibrant. I appreciate him for tying everything together in such a seamless manner.

The cases covered in this book are super realistic. It is scary how often such things happen in the real world. Take, for instance, Mr. Childs’ case. He was taken advantage of by his nephew using the excuse of COVID. Chance handled this case remarkably well. I was genuinely astonished by the ease with which Chance and Justice, his new investigator, unraveled the case of Warren Zevon’s painting. Damian and JR’s situation literally hurt my heart. I am glad that Chance never just gave up. He brought justice and made the guilty pay by hook or by crook.

The characterization in The Collectors is brilliant. It was a sobering experience seeing Chance evolve from a lawyer committed to the law to someone who gradually lost his belief in the system. Melody is one character that stood out despite her limited presence. She is vivacious. I loved her bond with Chance. Sally is a woman with many layers. Her decision regarding James, Melody’s biological father, made me admire her more. Justice is adorable. I love how he bonded with Tort, Chance’s dog. His mom’s sayings deeply resonated with me. Justice is indeed a man of action. I hope that we see more of him in the next books. Damian’s and JR’s friendship stood out. Mariana, the Costa Rican lawyer, and Constable, the fearless columnist, had my heart. Troy and Coop were amazing men. I appreciated the insight into the Costa Rican expat community and legal system. Dr. Renata is one complex antagonist with many layers. It is only because of Danzig’s masterful writing that I empathized with him, especially in the beginning.

Overall, The Collectors by Richard A. Danzig is a compelling read. This book is highly recommended to fans of legal thrillers. I can’t wait to read the next book in this series.

Reading is my passion, and writing is my compulsion. I started reading from a very early age. Since then, I have not stopped. I have garnered this addiction from my father. I have always loved reading his books. As you can see, books are my world. I escape this world to traverse the world of my books. Naturally, I have an affinity to create worlds of my own. There are thoughts constantly swirling in my head. These are the thoughts that I jot down. Sometimes, they become poems while sometimes stories. More often than not, they are just reviews of the plethora of books I read and the things I do.
