Review
The world that we live in is a vast place. There are diverse people living in it. Each country, in fact, each region, has its own unique way of life. You would be surprised by the sheer number of communities that live in a single country, let alone the whole wide world. Naturally, each group of people has its own culture. Despite this, we are all ultimately humans, made of flesh and blood. The unity in our diversity is the key aspect of our shared humanity.
Esperanza Pretila masterfully captures the essence of our unity in diversity in her debut book, Bridges of Words: Haikus Uniting Cultures from 57 Countries of the World. In her anthology of 57 haikus, she enlivens the core culture of 57 countries around the world. From the bustling cities of the United States of America to the majestic splendor of the oriental countries, from the deserts of the Middle East to the diverse beauty of Australia, from Europe’s ancient glory to the Indian subcontinent’s tranquil history, Pretila brings it all to life. With only a few lines of verses, she teleports us to different nations. This collection’s most admirable feature is its discussion of nations with unique cultures that differ greatly from one another. She does not limit herself to a particular geographical location. Pretila makes sure to show us that even when separated by oceans, every culture actually shares a common bond of humanity. Though different from each other, there is a commonality that cannot be ignored. Pretila beautifully showcases this in her book.
Esperanza Pretila’s love for humanity is evident in her writing. She respects each and every culture. The way she writes about all 57 countries makes us certain that she is a world citizen. Her writing does not discriminate. Her words act as bridges that unite humanity. She truly captures the shared universality of this world. I have to mention the Dedication section of this book. It warmed my heart to read how she values every single person in her life, both past and current.
Leaving out the photographs in Bridges of Words wouldn’t do it justice. For each country Pretila writes about, she adds a photo that highlights its culture. I found this to be a masterstroke as it helps the reader visualize the country they are reading about. This really sets the milieu. I have to say the formatting of this book is impeccable. It is visually appealing. The editing is commendable as well.
I do not exaggerate when I say that Esperanza Pretila’s Bridges of Words is a masterpiece. Amid the divisions of discrimination, it calls us back to what we all share as human beings. I highly recommend this lyrical piece to fans of haikus. People who like to learn about myriad countries and cultures will love Bridges of Words penned by Esperanza Pretila.
