Unheard by Bhavini Bhargava is a highly evocative collection of poetry that invokes in us a wide array of emotions.,

Bhargava’s deeply moving anthology encapsulates her journey of life between the ages of fifteen and nineteen. Divided into seven sections, the book explores a number of poignant themes. The poems in the first two sections, Against All Odds and Starting from Scratch, motivate us and urge us to look for the best within ourselves. Both these sections give off an aura of freshness and youth. Spirituality is the theme of Divine Presence. All three poems in this section have made a special place in my heart, especially Energy. It is akin to a prayer that makes us feel closer to God. The next section is named Loving Another Soul. This section consists of heart-touchingly realistic poems that bring to us the beautiful yet painful truth of love. Bhargava celebrates the joy of new love. She explores the mundane routineness that comes with a tried and tested relationship. The heartbreak that comes with the end of a relationship is also beautifully portrayed. Passionately Passionate is all about finding oneself again after being lost under the pressures of adulthood. The poem, My Worth, really touched my heart. It is indeed very empowering. The poems in The Last Straw section delve deep into the depressed soul. Was It All Worth broke my heart. The poem depicts the grief of the loved ones of a girl who decided to part ways with life. It beautifully gives us the perspectives of both the girl and those left behind. Drowning is a realistic portrayal of how the world expects us to behave despite our mental breakdown. Thoughts by the Lake is the last section of the book. Here, Bhargava muses about life in general. She talks about the fleeting nature of time, the judgments of people, and the importance of working to reach our goals. Stigma is one of my favorite poems. Gender discrimination is the theme of this poem. Bhargava portrays the dismal way women are still treated in today’s modern world. The internalized misogyny and the resultant horrors women still have to face are beautifully depicted. I love how she refers to Draupadi, a character from the Mahabharata, and Nirbhaya, a modern girl of the 21st century who faced a terrible fate due to the deviant desires of a few men. The last poem, Final Judgement, is a fitting conclusion to the anthology. It urges us to try everything we want and give our best before it is too late. 

It is evident that Bhavini Bhargava has led a full life filled with ups and downs. She has not let anything come between herself and her dreams of being an athlete. Her intense focus and dedication are reflected in her poems.  She adopts a stream-of-consciousness writing style that makes her poems very relatable. The poems are simple and easy to follow. They leave a mark on our hearts. Life is the predominant theme of her collection. Each and every poem talks about a different stage of life. It feels like Bhargava has not only penned her own feelings but also captured our emotions. I have to mention the doodles. The sketches fit the poems perfectly. 

Overall, Unheard by Bhavini Bhargava is a beautiful anthology of poems. It is astounding how she managed to craft such a masterful collection on her debut writing venture. I highly recommend Bhavini Bhargava’s Unheard to all fans of poetry. 

About the Author

Bhavini Bhargava is pursuing an undergraduate degree in Sports Management at Deakin University in Melbourne, Australia, on a Rajasthan Royals sports scholarship. She is a six-time national-level badminton player, having ranked in India’s top 20, and excelled academically in the commerce stream during school. Bhargava also competes in cricket at the national level in both India and Australia and is part of her university’s sports ambassador program.

As an author, Bhargava wrote Unheard, an Amazon international bestseller that explores the challenges of teenage life. Her work earned the Best Poet award in Dubai and was featured in the Middle East edition of Filmfare magazine (May/June 2023).
