Travel back in time to the American Jersey Shore in the 1940s, where a lurking threat, deadlier than sharks, threatened the lives of mariners, civilians and military alike, and the peace of the entire world.
When we think of the US involvement in World War II, most of us immediately think of Pearl Harbor. But few know that a few weeks after the Pearl Harbor attack, German submarines (U-boats) had already reached and threatened US coasts with a deadlier toll than the attack on Hawaii. Killing Shore by K.A. Nelson explores the genesis and the role that U-boats played in WWII, especially in relation to the US. This is not a work of historical fiction but a narrative embodiment of true historical facts. There are no made-up characters or events in the book, but the author brings life, light, and analysis to the topic, which makes this book different from typical history textbooks.
The book shines for its extremely organized format, which is helpful for people reading it from beginning to end, but most importantly, it allows readers to come back to it as a research source. K.A. Nelson did a splendid job of bringing to life the players of this underwater war. Their curated use of adjectives helps in the vivid descriptions. For example, one particular admiral is described as “flinty.” The author doesn’t shy away from describing the most pedestrian aspects of life in the submarines, which also helps the reader picture something that’s totally foreign to most of us. Using the original language for quotes (German, obviously, but also Spanish, for example) also enhances the reading experience. The photos included were a personal favorite of mine.
The analysis of the ideology behind the Ubootwaffe was fascinating. Were the people, the flesh and bone men in these submarines actual Nazis? Was the hierarchy as strict as in other areas of the military? How did this change as the war soared? What was the German perception of the Americans? The answers to these questions are fascinating. The countries at play are not limited to Germany and the United States, and the author does a great job of showing the worldwide maze of alliances and influences.
Submarines can seem, as the author acknowledges, a grey subject. Unlike the ships, which are granted a female pronoun and usually shrouded in lore, “They bear, in place of classic names, Letters and numbers on their skin. They play their grisly blindfold games In little boxes made of tin.” Considering the former quote by poet Rudyard Kipling, a hefty volume about such a niche subject can seem daunting, indeed. And it’s important to acknowledge that its target audience is limited. The intricacies and technicalities involved can be tedious and meaningless for the average reader.
However, the author does his best to explain most of the terminology in a simple and organic way. Furthermore, we need historical records and analysis of such an important event for humanity as WWII was. Dissecting this massive tragedy to the slightest minutiae is the only way to understand it fully, and understanding it fully is the only thing that will prevent us from falling prey to such an event again.
