Review

Heir to the Ice Flame is a fantastic fantasy novel penned by Rose Harvey. The book teleports us to the magical realm of Scardia and its neighboring lands.

The story revolves around Nina. Ever since she was seven, Nina has been traversing the various villages of Scardia trying her best to hide her true identity. However, with her eighteenth birthday on the horizon, she can no longer stay under the radar. The usurper, who dethroned her parents and left her orphaned, has redoubled his efforts to find the last heir to the Ice Flame and get rid of her for good. On the other hand, there is a Resistance growing. There are people who are willing to give their all to install the true princess to the throne. Nina herself is not sure whether she deserves to be the queen. Moreover, she is plagued with guilt after losing all her loved ones.

Will Nina flee from her responsibilities, or will she embrace her destiny as the true heir to the Ice Flame?

Heir to the Ice Flame kept me glued to the pages from the very first word. Rose Harvey is indeed a master storyteller. She builds a world that is easily imaginable. The myths and descriptions of Scardia and the Eastern Lands are very vivid. The way Harvey uses flashbacks to take us between the past and the present is appreciable. She does it so seamlessly that I was never once baffled. In fact, it made me all the more eager to know what would happen next. Also, I loved how Harvey incorporates mythical creatures like spirits and elves in the story. It made the reading super enjoyable. I have to mention that I really like how the story is told from Nina’s first person point-of-view. It made me feel like I was there with her every step of the way.

I love how nuanced the characters of Heir to the Ice Flame are. Nina is just a young girl. Yet, she has experienced a lot in her short life. She has lost her family as well as her friends. She is no stranger to betrayal. Harvey beautifully showcases Nina’s vulnerabilities. Nina’s hesitancy to trust people makes her all the more human. Her survivor’s guilt and her trepidation to go back to the royal way of life make her very relatable. I loved watching her harness her inner strength and grow into a strong young lady. Eric is another character I highly empathize with. He brought out the best in Nina. I enjoyed watching her interactions with him. Markus is a dashing ship captain. The chemistry between him and Nina is smoldering. Dylan is a true eccentric. I am pretty sure there is more to him. My favorite character, apart from Nina, is Keely. I loved how he sneaked his way by Nina’s side. His budgerigar, Lisette, made a special place in my heart as well. I hope we get to see more of Keely in the next book.

Overall, I truly enjoyed reading Rose Harvey’s debut book, Heir to the Ice Flame. I am more than eager to get my hands on the next book in the series. I highly recommend this enthralling book to fans of fantasy, romance, adventure, and coming-of-age novels.

Reading is my passion, and writing is my compulsion. I started reading from a very early age. Since then, I have not stopped. I have garnered this addiction from my father. I have always loved reading his books. As you can see, books are my world. I escape this world to traverse the world of my books. Naturally, I have an affinity to create worlds of my own. There are thoughts constantly swirling in my head. These are the thoughts that I jot down. Sometimes, they become poems while sometimes stories. More often than not, they are just reviews of the plethora of books I read and the things I do.
