Review
The town of Lower Lynch harbors a terrible secret. For many years, local girls have gone missing, their drowned bodies having washed up at the Deception Bay. The townspeople once condemned Alice Emerson for suspected witchcraft; however, the disappearances did not stop even after her execution. Although the bay and the surrounding forests are now forbidden areas and The Watch patrols the town regularly, more and more girls seem to go missing each year. Lacey, Alice’s daughter, cannot decipher what lures the girls out to the bay. Why does she feel unsafe in the town she grew up in? Why does Bella, her elder sister, frown upon her friendship with Mateo, a Romani boy she has known since childhood? Most importantly, despite the rumors of Lacey being a witch, why does Mayor Abner order her to marry his son? Find out the answers in Deception Bay, a novel by N. N. Parker.
Deception Bay is a slow burn in which Parker takes time to set a dark, ominous mood. The infamous, forlorn bay seems to raise a dire warning in this atmospheric novel. The three peaks of the abandoned island seem to keep watch over the hapless, lost souls. The unnavigable forests rumored to harbor ferocious beasts fuel our fears. The grim settings perfectly match the terror and insecurity pervading the townspeople. From the beginning, the reader has a nagging sense that something is not right in this haunted town. The mysticism of Romani lore, secret spell books, and hidden alters enhances this feeling.
The tale is full of harrowing secrets and strange twists. There are some unsavory characters whose vile nature manifests in everything they do. Yet, we have the distinct feeling that the evil has even deeper roots lurking behind careful masks. Parker does not unveil these secrets until the end, keeping the readers on tenterhooks. Even after the revelations, we wait with bated breath to see the climax unfold.
Parker creates an authentic portrayal of the society of the time, with the discrimination between the males and the females apparent at every step. In this male-dominated society, women have no say in their lives, instead having to adhere to the norms set for them. They are playthings at men’s hands, who do not think twice before lusting after a girl they have known since her childhood. If a girl dares to sidestep the domination, they tag her as disobedient, and they call her a witch.
I love how Parker focuses on each major character, detailing their backstories and endearing them to the readers. We find Bella’s demeanor somewhat austere until we learn of her sacrifice. Mateo’s heartbreak breaks us. We empathize with Lacey as she helplessly watches the world carve her a path she does not want to take. We share her desperation when she realizes something is fundamentally wrong with the town yet cannot convince anyone. We stay with her through the periods of self-doubt when her neighbors suspect her of being a witch. We root for her when she finally dares to raise her voice and sets to unearth the mystery. I love how she refuses to obey the age-old dogma and learns to embrace her true self. Deception Bay is thus a powerful read I will wholeheartedly recommend.

Witch hunts were definitely a form of attempting to dominate female initiative. But I love a haunted story! And Romani culture is fascinating. Thank you!
