Review
Have you ever had nightmares about monsters? What if a real-life monster invades your basement? What will you do if people around you start dying and you become the primary suspect? J.J. Alo’s hair-raising thriller, The Street Between the Pines, enmeshes us in the life of Curtis Reynolds, a man in the exact same predicament.
An accident changes the life of army veteran, Curtis Reynolds. Estranged from his beloved wife, Amy, and distanced from Wes, his son with special needs, a guilt-stricken Curtis spends most of his time away from home working third shifts. With his biological clock turned upside down, he has little to no sleep. Moreover, the horrific visions from his time in the Gulf War have returned to haunt him. To add to everything, a big pharmaceutical company plans to acquire his house along with the other properties in his neighborhood.
While working on a project at Mondo Mart, Curtis gets a frantic message from Amy asking him to return to their home on Forest Street. In his hurry, he leaves his tool bag behind. Back home, Curtis finds that a horrific fate has befallen his neighbors and friends, Frank and Estelle Cavanaugh. Also, to the Reynolds’ surprise, their other neighbors seem to have vacated their homes. With the threat of an impending storm, Curtis reluctantly decides to stay home to prepare the house for the upcoming calamity. When his coworker, Miguel, calls him and tells him about his forgotten tool bag, he rushes to Mondomart to retrieve it despite Amy’s pleadings for him to stay back. Back home, Curtis finds his wife and son trapped in the basement by a monster straight out of nightmares.
Who is the monster haunting Connecticut’s Norwich? Will Curtis be able to save himself and his family from the creature? Will he be able to face the demons of his past and start afresh with Amy and Wes?
Divided into three parts, The Street Between the Pines is primarily set in Norwich, Connecticut. J.J. Alo brings the ocean, woods, rivers, roads, and towns of Connecticut to life with his vivid words. His love for the place is palpable. He masterfully crafts a milieu of horror. The storm, blackouts, and deserted streets all hitch our breaths. We feel the terror of Frank, Roland, Amy, and Curtis when they come face-to-face with the Norwakaus. The Norwakaus itself is beautifully written. Though unquestionably a monster, Alo somehow makes us empathize with it. One of the key elements in the book is the role of cats. The cats of Laurel Hill had my heart. I love how Alo gradually builds up their importance in the story.
J.J. Alo is a brilliant author who keeps us waiting for the next twist with bated breath. While Part I and Part II send chills through our spines, Part III of the book completely boggles the mind. It reveals answers that leave you gaping. Delving into the realm of science-fiction, Alo gives us a glimpse of the true state of our world. We get to know about how the higher powers use science for their own twisted purposes, with little regard for the common people. Alo sheds light on eminent domain, a law that left me flabbergasted.
Each and every character of The Street Between the Pines is individually fleshed out, no matter how small a role they have. We live Frank and Estelle’s life with them before they exit the plot. Roland’s tiff with his wife and in-laws makes us feel sorry for him. Mallory Luske and her dog’s fate breaks our hearts. Aldrich Douglas astounds us. The brilliant yet insane scientist has a lot of knowledge to offer. Miguel brings in a dose of humor that often slices through the thick tension. The Chastains, Amy’s parents, are well-portrayed as well. Even Deputy Rick leaves a mark on the reader’s mind. These are all minor characters with little screen presence. Alo’s ability to make us feel for them is a testament to his writing prowess.
Curtis Reynolds is a complicated character. He is by no means perfect. I love how Alo portrays mental health issues like PTSD and anxiety through him. His story is indeed one of redemption. Curtis adores his family yet he has lost his way in life. Despite her parents’ objections, Amy loves Curtis with all her heart. It is Curtis himself who slowly wedges a gap between them by refusing to deal with his past. It is heartening to see the two of them find their way back to each other. Wes is a special child. It is no wonder that both his parents love him despite their own differences. The way Alo showcases the journey of the Reynolds family is indeed admirable.
Overall, I loved reading J.J. Alo’s The Street Between the Pines. The book kept me on my toes wanting to find out what happens next till the very end. I highly recommend J.J. Alo’s unputdownable book to fans of horror, science-fiction, thriller, and psychological novels. It is indeed a must-read.

Is it me, or do some of the best horror books feature some sort of sleep deprivation? The mental health aspect you mentioned made this especially intriguing.
